Holding 6 month old wrong???

Worrier28 · 29/09/2009 14:27

I posted yesterday about my six month old baby who is refusing the bottle, unfortunately no-one replied

I went to my HV and explained he was taking all his feed during the night and was getting trapped wind (very windy) and that is a vicious cycle. He is teething and I would've been happy with that explanation had he not been to his grandmas (who he does not see often) and took bottles during the day. The HV said he is probably comfortable in the way she is holding him? How am I suppose to hold him???? Does he associate me with trapped wind?

Have you asked your mother / MIL how she held him?

I don't think your baby's associating you with trapped wind. Are you normally breastfeeding? I have heard babies are generally happier to take bottles from people other than the breastfeeding mother, because they can't smell milk on them, and with their mum they know there's an option they're happier with

My baby's very windy and I try to sit her as upright as possible.

Thanks for replying, I only breastfed for 3 days, had a caesarean, found it difficult and there was no-one to help, anyhow that is another story! So it can't be the milk smell, there's nothing in there.

His grandma is taking him this weekend, I have done the upright thing and although I am exhausted it makes the night feeds better if I can get the wind out - thanks it helps if I rub, rub, pat, pat that get stand up with him upright.

Worrier - he is probably picking up on your stress re daytime bottles and the ensuing battle whereas his grandma didnt have such stresses. See if he'll take bottles from your partner during the day and if he does, see how he holds him. It is a phase and will pass - my 7 month old is currently reverse cycling (bottles during day, bf during night - guess which one he's going for) but seems to be gradually sorting himself out.

dunno if it applies in your case but DS1 prefered to take bottles from ladies with bigger chests and hated being fed by DH!

Also do you both use same bottles & teats? As I know grandmas for some reason like to have thier "own" stuff for DG.

Ex partner lives with mum (long story)and doubt he feeds him, probably right about the stress (exhausted) thing I was crying yesterday, I will chill out and go at his pace and have a look at his grandmas bosooms! Thank

Oh and grandma does have her own stuff always better than mine, thankfully we are using the same bottles.

Could it be the temperature of the milk? Ds very fussy about this, mayb she makes it hotter/cooler than you? Just an idea but more likely you're just knackered and stressed, you have my sympathies x

I've experimented with temperatures, he just seems to be too 'busy' to want his milk the rascal! I've decided to keep sneaking in feeds before he sleeps of course then he gets trapped wind, even after a lucious burp there is STILL more. So I am going to go for two burps from now on, been told he should be able to do it on his own soon.

hmmm also had a thought - mil & dm also have a knack of not quite telling the truth so as not to ""make"" ""themselves"" ""look"" ""bad"" worry you.

DS may not be taking bottle from MIL as well as she might suggest!

How is weaning going?? DS1 stopped taking any milk in the day at 7 months(started weaning at 4.5) so I just gave him a couple of joghurts or cheese to replace the milk at those times, HV said they needed 20 ounce a day from 6 months (including all sources, breakfast, snacks etc so not just bottles) so he got this from his bottle at morning & bedtimes plus diet. If daytime bottles are causing you such a problem it might be another thing to try (as soon as weaning is well established)

I know about the not looking bad thing, I think in the past she has not told the truth about things when I ask her, however when he came back from his last visit (two weeks ago) he took the bottle that night and once the following morning until I assume he realised it was me!!

Glad to hear that he only needs 20 ounces he takes that during the night, my problem is getting the trapped wind up, if I could master that he would probably only get up twice.

I started weaning at 4months, he is fine with food and takes it no problem (I haven't been filing him up on solids as has been suggested). Thanks so much for your help, he is going to his grans again this weekend so hopefully he will 'reset' himself.
