Infant feeding

Aching breast and itchy nipple

My right nipple started feeling really itchy last night and today it feels really achy and bruised deep inside. Can't feel any obvious lumps and I feel fine in myself but am wondering if this is a blocked duct or start of mastitus.

Have been offering dd (7 months) this breast to feed from frequently today to try and clear it if this is the problem but pain seems to be getting worse.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is and what I should be doing? Thanks for your help.

Ouch - poor you. I had a really achy breast for a while and nobody could really explain it to me. It wasn't thrush, and I did have mastitis but the aching started a week before the mastitis and continued for a while afterwards. One nurse said it could be a bit of internal bruising. Are you feeding OK? I think if it's mastitis your breast will go bright red and hot. Hope it gets better soon for you. xx

Thanks. I think it must be a blocked duct as DD hasn't been feeding great the past few days - too interested in everything else. Luckily today she hasn't seemed interested in food so she's been taking milk a bit better. She seems to be getting a bit frustrated feeding on that side though. I've tried to hand express a bit as well and the milk has been really shooting out of that side where normally I just get a trickle as I'm a bit rubbish at expressing - is that normal with a blocked duct?

Will try some new positions tomorrow and hope we can get it cleared.

DH has told me to stop using the laptop if I'm going to be shooting milk all over it
