Where has all the booby juice gone. :-(

Apologies in advance for rambling.

I have been BF DS for 7months now. Over the last couple of months I have started a couple of threads about his fussiness at the boob on and off like a yoyo. But basically put it down to his age etc.

But tonight he has had formula to settle him. I have always since about 6wks given him FF feed at 10pm ish mainly because for some reason this time round expressing just hasnt worked for me. I expressed all the time with DS1 and used to get 7oz/day. Anyway gave him his boob tonight and he was on and off as usual. But he just wouldnt settle when I put him down re-offered boob several times a few half hearted sucks then pulling off. I decided to try him with formula to see whether he was actually still hungry he drank 5oz then fell asleep immedialty I put him down.

Do you think that all the fussiness is because my boobs have shut up shop and he is just not getting enough milk from me?

Oh BTW he has 4BF/day then 1FF then nothing during the night, he stopped night feeding several wks ago I did get quite nasty mastitis after he stopped night feeding but anitbiotics cleared it up pretty quickly.

Sorry for going on and on...

If you offer formula, he will take it whether he is truly hungry or not.

Unfortunately, because he has taken it, it will confirm your belief he is hungry.

4 breastfeeds isn't a lot really. You could offer him more feeds to boost your supply if you think there is a problem.

i reckon the fussiness IS just an age/distractible thingy. however, it would probably be just as well to give one of the bf hotlines a call and see what they reckon. or go to a local breastfeeding cafe if there is one near you (www.thebabycafe.co.uk)

babies will take a bottle after a feed. even if they have had enough breastmilk. they just do. it really isn't an indication that you have no milk, it's just very easy for them to suck and they will generally take it.
if your milk had gone then he'd be telling you about it!!! he'd be desperately hungry by now

when you say he has 4 bf a day,.are you doing some kind of routine with him? I only ask as I wonder if perhaps your official "feeding" time just isn't when he wants it to be? do you feed on demand or by the clock?

He wont take anymore feeds during the day. I offer. Ha is on 3 solid meals a day so is eating alot. But thanks for the reassurance that he would take the FF whatever. DP suggested the same. Just having a wee collywobble about it

I guess he is fed on routine now. But led by him. When he wakes in the morning then after his morning nap again after his afternoon nap then before bed.

Does he not have a breastfeed with any of his meals? At 7 months I was still offering a breastfeed with all meals and in between.

Have never thought about offering boob with his meal as he has it pretty much just before. He has been very much a only take it when he really wants it type of a chap.

I gave solids then breast. Even if he only has 5 mins it is good stimulation.

Sorry not being very clear. he sleeps from 9-11.30 BF then about 30 mins later has lunch. Then feeds again around 4ish with his tea another 30 mins later so I suppose his feeds are just before his solids.

I seriously dont think there are enough hours in the day to get more in him. He just wouldnt take the boob. Also DS1 would be watching cbeebies 24/7 if he fed more.

Will give that a bash Mears but he never feeds for longer than 5 mins a side anyway.

Could his tea be a bit later? 4.30 seems kind of early.

He could have his tea 5.30. Bath and breastfeed 7,30-8.30pm? No attempt at dream feed.

It is fairly early but we are not definite on that time. We are a bit hit and miss flexible on what time we eat at.

Bedtime is a non negotiable. Both my boys are early to bed early to rise chaps no amount of later bedtime works just makes the pair of them miserable.

Are you lifting him for dream feed then?

How early is bedtime? Just interested

Sorry Mears went to bed.

I lift him around 10.30pm for a DF.

He goes to bed at 7.15.

Well I would definitely try not lifting him and see what happens.

As I said at the beginning of the thread, I tried dream feeds and DS1 still woke so I left him to his own devices and he slept through.

With next 3 babies I never started a dream feed at all.
