Infant feeding

Is 'slurping' a problem?

My 3mo (breastfed) DS often makes a sort of slurping noise when he drinks - I don't know how best to describe it but it sounds a little like the noise you make when you suck the roof of your mouth with your tongue. He doesn't do it all the time and I've got the impression its more at the start of a feed, but I really can't work out how to stop him doing it. Pulling him closer doesn't seem to do anything, and I dont seem to manage to get him to open his mouth wider. It doesn't hurt me, but I was wondering if this could be related to the fact he is also a very sicky baby? Does anyone else have experience of this?

Both my DSs did (and do) this, I assumed it's due to a fast let-down. If he's sicky as well, there are a few things you can try, such as catching the first strong jet after let-down on a muslin and feeding from one side only for several feeds.

some v useful info here:

Mine made large gulping noises as if downing a pint of lager.

Tis all part of the joy of BF
