Infant feeding

DS's feeding is a bit topsy-turvy

Wonder if anyone has a few pearls of wisdom for me...DS is nearly 8 months and on three meals a day (started solids at 6.5 months, doing well)- but he's hardly drinking milk (bfing) in the day - a few cursory snatches 2-3 times a day , a good feed at bedtime (he has a beaker of water with meals). Then he has 2-3 feeds a night (I think, he usually comes in our bed so often lose count). I'm unsure if he's getting enough milk. He's 21lbs, staying on his centile. Stupid question, but does the fact he is eating meals now mean he won't want much milk? Is he giving up? Thanks, Dinny

Milk consumption does cut down after solids are introduced but it is still recommended for them to have around 20 ounces of milk (formula/bm per day). This amount doesnt all have to be taken as a drink as any milk used with cereal, in food, in cooking also counts as does any dairy products you use e.g. cheese, yoghurt, etc.

It sounds that he is getting plenty although he seems to be taking a lot of it at night rather than during the day. Thats ok if it doesnt bother you, but you may want to encourage your lo to take more in the day by restricting bf at night. That way you both get more rest at night and he takes more milk in the day. (thats if you want to chnage things round - if it suits you stick with what you are doing already)
