calling all BF gurus!! I am bfing my 13 week old boy and everything is ging well, but he hasn't had a poo for 6 days now. He had a flu bug last week and was quite ill so had calpol which gave him an upset tummy with watery stools and mucus. He does seem to be getting uncomfortable as he sometimes cries and wriggles as though in pain. Do you think that he's just getting his tummy back to normal or should I get some lactolose as recommended by the HV? What do y'all think?

My Ds is 22wks and bf and he quite often goes 5 - 6 days without a poo and when he poo's, he explodes! Up until about 12wks he used to poo every day and then all of a sudden went longer inbetween. I think it's normal but in your case it may just be because he's been poorly and his body is just recovering. My Ds seems to get a little more fretful before he finally poo's but thought it was hysterical yesterday when his poo reached the back of his neck! The joys of motherhood!

bf babies do not get constipated. it's totally normal for a bf baby of that age to go for up to 10 days without poo-ing.
t may be explosive when it arrives though lol

I agree BF babies do often go a long time without a poo and it is worrying the first time they leave it. Mine have both gone a week, iirc. I have heard of cases of anything up to 10 days without a poo. After that I would think about seeing a GP.

The fact that your DS also had an upset stomach also means that he might not poo. I know when mine have been the same they can go several days after a bug without going although they didn't ever have a bug whilst being exclusively bf so I am not sure what would have happened then.

As Ebb says though, it trully is a sight to behold when they do go. Don't leave the house without a change of clothing and plenty of wipes until he has done it.
