Anyone bottle-feeding a baby weighing around 21lb but not on solids yet?

And if so, what is their average daily intake of milk? I am breastfeeding but going away for 2 days soon and with bfing can't see how much ds4 is taking and want to know how much EBM to leave for him.

According to guidelines on my aptamil pack your baby should be taking 7 fl oz or 210 mil per feed. There should roughly be 5 feeds a day up until 6 months and then 3 feeds a day 7-12 months.

There's a thing to calculate how much bm you need to leave here Bf babies typically need 1oz per hour from a bottle.

Breastfeeding is different though as your milk enriches with time, so the amount that they take in is constant between approx 6 weeks and when they start dropping feeds as solids increase.

DS was around 21lb at 6 months, and when I was away for work he had 120ml per feed every 3 hours in the day with one 6 hour gap at night

charchar, I tried that calulator but it seems to suggest that ds4 would need 53oz per day???
Which seemed a lot to me! But he does have a hefty appetite and has no trouble downing an 8oz bottle if left with a minder.
So the milk does get more calorific with time, then, cmotdibbler? I wasn't sure about that.

sorry, charchar, that actually wasn't the calculator I tried! Mine was a weight-based calulator given to me in hospital when ds3 was a baby but was probably based prem babies.

Actually, kellymom linked me to www.fourfriends.com/cgi-bin/milk.pl?lbs=21&oz=&feed=5&formula= which does seem to suggest a max of 52oz with an average of 47oz.
And ds4 does seem to have a large appetite! Oh Lord, I suppose I'd better keep with that assumption.
I will not be on Mumsnet for a while, I will be off expressing!

Yes - def does. Also, I know that DS had expressed milk at nursery 5 days a week from 4.5 months to 14 months, and in all that time, he never wanted more than 120ml per feed

ds4 is obviously a glutton then! Oh well, he would get that from his Dad!

Are you feeding ebm or formula while away? Formula is different to bm, and more is needed. BF babies typically need 19-30oz a day, with an average of 25oz, which equates to about 1oz per hor away from you.

It hopefully will be entirely EBM, which is why I'm doing these mad calculations. I will get some formula for emergency use only. My Mum is very pro-bf so I know she would only resort to it if she had to. Now, if it were MIL.......!

ChipMonkey not being funny but how many feeds does you DS have?

If 6 then around 5ozs a feed?

MatNan, the trouble is, I don't really count the feeds! I think he probably feeds around 6 times a day but some days it could be 5, some days 8, depending on his humour. And I am quite, quite sure that he takes at least 6oz at a time. If I miss a feed, I easily express 6oz at that time and babies are supposed to be more efficient than pumps. He took a full 8oz for MIL earlier today when I was out and it was less than 3 hours since I'd fed him.

I see, i am giving 2 formula feeds to a BF baby and she was taking 7ozs at 11:00 and then struggling before 3:00 to take more than 2ozs so after looking at the table yesterday i spoke to mummy and i reduced the 11:00 to 5ozs and she still slept the same and then had 4ozs at 2:30 which is meant to be the feed time and BF better this evening.

Mummy had been finding the same will stuff herself then sleep but she is a fab sleeper anyway but be sluggish in the afternoon.

She only BF's for 10 minutes max and that is with some pausing and is packing it on so do think we were offering more than she needed.

Will see how it goes.
