Infant feeding

Help would really be appreciated, DD not settling and anxious at breast among other things......

Hi I was wondering whether someone could help?

DD is 3 weeks old and today she has been very unsettled and crying. When put on breast she feds well for a couple of minutes and then becomes aggitated and draws her legs up and pulls off. This continues on both breasts and is regardless of how much I try and wind her. She then is either sick (which looks like curdled milk) or becomes upset again.

i wondered whether it could have been something I ate today or yesterday but the only thing that has been different in my diet over the last 24hours is that yesterday evening I had fresh pineapple, could this cause any side effects?

Am really worried as I don't want 2 be up all night second guessing what is happening with my normally settled DD.

Could anyone please help as Breast feeding seems quite confusing at times!

Ta

No idea , but bumping for you - is the curdled milk sick a new thing?

Yep it's only been today and to me it seems quite a bit and smells rank!

It's just out of character for her and my boobies are starting to hurt as I keep trying to put her to them for comfort.

It could be the pineapple because allergies to such acidic fruits are becoming more common. I wouldnt have thought it was this though.

Have you tried infacol or colief yet?

If you are uncomfortable, have you tried expressing a little?

I thought it could have been that as I had this reaction of her been unsettled after having curry but never being so sick all day.

I havent tried infacol as I want to try and not put 'medicines' inside her yet if it's something to do with my diet.

Would it cause my milk to taste different then? It's just unlike her as she is such a guzzler normally!

Its sounds like baby is suffering from colic, bringing up their knees is a bit of a give away. Have you asked your Health Visitor? I would persevere on the breast though, food you eat can can an effect.

Would colic be all day though?

My DS had it but it was only in the evenings and this has been all day?

Right a few questions for you:

How is baby's weight gain?
Is she pooing and weeing okay?
Is she alert?
When she unlatches does your milk spray everywhere?
Are you worried about anything else?

Ok here goes.....

Have only had her weighed at 10days but she seems to be growing and is filling out her clothes. At 10days she had put on weigh and was 8.3, after being born 7.13.

She is pooing and weeing fine, if anything she has had more poos today than for a couple of days.

Yeah she is alert has been awake for most of today. She would fall asleep in my arms then when transfer to the moses would wake up and cry.

It was at lunchtime and early this evening but after an episode earlier it has stopped,so have put her in the bouncer to try and give my boobs a rest.

Only that her soft spot is a bit dipped but I know that is not the only way to tell.

Am I just being unreasonable and making something out of nothing? Please just tell me that I shouldn't eat pineapple and it's not colic and we'll be back on track tomorrow!

What about the milk spray?

Do you mean if she pulls off what its like?

If she pulls off soon after staring it sorays out with force if she's been on a while it drips out. More often than not she's always got a mouthful of milk as she comes off.

Does that help?

sounds like she might just be too full and a bit windy.dd2 when newborn used to throw up a lot with extra milk as my flow was quite fast-yours is just getting really established so she might just be filling up too much and so not very comfy.Leave her a couple of hours and then feed again,of course if she seems to really be vomiting then watch her closely and get medical advice if she's sick a few times.it can be hard to differentiate though as both mine often brought up what looked like an entire feed with no ill effects.

Okay, have been reliably informed that it could be over/forceful supply.

Have a look here for some tips

Think that's the problem as I can't really seem to know how much she's had and then when she's brings up so much I feel like she isn't getting anything!

I'm going to try going to bed with her and hope that the night doesn't bring any suprise's!

Thank you for you're help it's reassuring to speak to people on here as RL just say she's a baby!

I'll check back in the night for any other responses. Thank you

Hi ya,

well last night wasn't as bad as i imagined but today she has been the same but not being sick, so am thinking that she is becoming more alert during the day and me feeding her all the time is bad for my nipples

Thank you for all the replies, I'm going to keep an eye on my milk supply and hope that it settles itself.

I was so panicked with dd2 that I convinced myself she had reflux, but no,she was just feeding often,my flow was fast, and she was getting too full and puking out the extra! She was gaining weight and otherwise fine, and as my health visitor had said,as she got bigger it stopped. She sounded just like yours,I was feeding her to comfort her but she was too full.
