12 weeks and hates milk

I have a 12 week old who is bottle fed and seems to be always in pain when feeding,we tried the hv but no joy there, she just suggested trial and error for different formulas. we tried colic relief etc but no improvement so we switched to omneo comfort about 4 weeks ago which is much better for bringing up her wind. Her trouble now is that she fights every feed, she hates taking the bottle and screams lots, its as though she associates the bottle with pain so we have to wait until she's half asleep then we can feed her. Now she goes anything from 4 to 6 hours between feeds and only takes 3 to 5 ounces very irregular and still doesnt always want it. any suggestions?

Is she putting on weight? Does the seem alert when she is awake? Apart from the behaviour at feeding, are you concerned about her otherwise?

have you spoken to your hv about this? maybe she has a sore mouth or something, like oral thrush. babies (although usually younger than 12 weeks) can get this. or maybe shes teething? my dd started teething at 3 months, and had a very sore gum.

or maybe she has a cold ie blocked nose (which can make it difficult for them to feed) and a sore throat. does she have a temp? she is old enough to have calpol if you suspect this. or speak to the chemist.

i think it sounds like your wee one is getting enough milk, but as bloss said as long as she is putting on weight and happy and content at other times its ok.

although it must be difficult for you to see her not enjoying her milk

yes nailpolish shes still putting on weight although its poor at the moment. We've spoken to the hv about it many many times and she tells us to persist with milk although we are trying a little bit of solids and shes enjoying them so i just think she might be a baby who needs solids a little earlier as well as her milk. Yes Bloss We have given her dentinox teething gel as she seems to have been teething for a couple of weeks now, at the moment she has a cough and a bit of a cold as well as diarrhoea but i dont think the cold has anything to do with it because today she has been feeding well, (although she was half asleep).she is a happy baby though and the docs and hv are not worried as her weightgain is still ok. We did have a major problem at the weekend though as during the night (3.30am) we woke and she wasn't breathing, it took a while to bring her round as she was totally lifeless and pale. after what seemed like a lifetime she began to breath but was so deeply asleep she didnt seem to be bothered. we stayed awake the rest of the night in fear of going back to sleep. On sunday we called the hospital and were told to take her to the GP on monday am which we did, but the GP referred us straight to the local hospital for tests. The hospital did an examination and a chest xray and then she stayed in overnight. The doc said it could be reflux but we dont think so. For peace of mind we bought an Angelcare monitor for under the mattress which sounds an alarm if she stops breathing or her heart stops. They didnt want us to buy this and said it wasnt a good idea because it will take away our natural instinct to wake if theres a problem. What a load of rubbish they talk, we bought it as a back up because i could never forgive myself if anything happened to her and i had done nothing to prevent it. Did anyone have a similar problem?

reine - all this must be really stressful for you. The pain on feeding suggests the possibility of lactose intolerance or reflux, or at least a history of it. Is relactation a possibility for you, do you think? Not an easy option, but if you want to discuss it, re-post.

tiktok - i may sound stupid but what is relact ating? is that breast feeding again? i have been having problems with my little un, he cries during feed almost straining for poo but he isnt constipated

Yep - relactating means breastfeeding again

Anyone who has had a baby can produce milk again, though the longer time between stopping feeding and starting again, the more motivated you have to be, as it may not be easy.

You can look for relactation in the archives on mumsnet or on the web, or call one of the bf helplines and ask.

Omneo comfort is very thick.Have you tried changing teats,she may be struggling as the teat may be to small

sorry we werent able to use the PC for a while, but i cant believe the difference this week, its the first time she's fed properly since she was a few weeks old. suddenly she started having 6 - 7 ounce per feed instead of 3 - 4 ounce and shes not crying about it either... its great
