Infant feeding

co-sleeping + BF = overfeeding + wind????

I recently started co-sleeping with DS (12 weeks) since we were traveling. As other MNetters report, he BF much more often during the night (5-7 times? -- I didn't really fully wake up for any of them, so didn't count.) But: he seemed to suffer from wind and indigestion and woke up in the early mornings clearly in pain and pooed much more. So, did he overfeed (my gut feeling but I thought one cannot overfeed a BF baby?) or was is due to other changes (traveling, maybe change of diet, growth spurt?). Would like to continue to co-sleep, but only if its good for him. Should say he also gained lots of weight (good), but this could be due either to growth spurt or all the night feeds. Oh and we will be traveling some more, so I cannot really try it out at home and then see. Thank you for any advice/ suggestions.

I co-slept with both mine (due to my inability to stay awake at night feeds) and rarely experianced these probs. mine also seemed to stay attached for most of the night. Could just be other changes eg the travelling upset his equilibrium. Personally I would have said if he's also piled it on weight wise then it's due to a growth spurt, my memory is shakey, but I'm sure they have one around 12 weeks.

Could it be he simply couldn't believe his luck?

they have spurts at 7 and 12 weeks and another one later but I'm not sure when this is. I breast fed and shared a bed with my ds, he settled down to one feed a night. I swear, sometimes I'd wake up in the morning at he had been fed, no idea how though, don't even remember getting them out. You just have to be careful of you rolling over, I used to stay close to the edge and put him torards the wall so if I rolled i'd either fall off or roll into the space between us. Good luck. Maybe try winding him after bf incase it's wind.

I'd do that!

I'd wake up and think how did you get there??? Although rolling over was never an issue, I just knew I had a baby there, and even now, tend to sleep in one position.

It's really freaky, waking up with your bits out, no idea how that happened, baby happily sucking away. I never rolled, I was always frightened of doing it though. He's 8 now and we're very close. He's a mummy's boy.

Thank you. I am not really worried about rolling over him and wouldnt co-sleep if I had any alcohol or wouldnt feel well. Although I was almost asleep during the feeds I always sensed where he was. (I made sure that he was clear of my blanket at all times during the night.)

Well, the problem was that I hardly woke up and couldnt be bothered with winding. Normally he then possets more, but it has never affected his digestion.

I was amazed how far he traveled though .
I bedded him more than a meter away (huge bed) and somehow he made it to my boobs in no time. I have no idea how he did it, since he cant roll yet [hmmm]

Not sure yet what to do. I have to admit that traveling was much easier than anticipated (traveling was not planned but a necessity), but its much harder to figure out what is cause and effect (different time zone is another one...)

Thanks for sharing -- any other experiences?

It's definiatly amazing what they can do if they think a boob is their reward
