Hey there, switched to ff a week ago, ds has been pooing but not anywhere near as regular as when was bf, not really worried as apparently this is normal on formula, only a bit worried now as he didn't poo yesterday at all and now he seems to have a bit of pain occasionally where he cries and draws his knees up and farts a bit, could judt be wind but i think it's cause he really needs to poo. Anyone else found this with SMA? any advice on getting him to poo? tried bycicling his legs but just farts a bit

DS (now 6) was FF (Milumil) and used to get constipated. Doc recommended adding an extra ounce of water to every feed. Worked for us - I did it till he came off formula.

he's now done a poo thank god but still was a while in between poo's, that sounds like common sense to add extra water although i'm a bit scared to do it as it says on the packet has to be exact measurements etc etc , suppose i could ask my doc and see what they say? Thanks for the advice buda . I'm sure i once read on here that aptimil wasn't quite so bad for constipation, anyone know if this is the case? also is it bad to suddenly switch lo to a different type of formula or will it not really make much difference?

GIve him cooled boiled water in between feeds. Just a few sips, not too much. THis happened with my DS when he was about 3 months, and the HV also suggested squeezing a fresh orange into cooled boiled water and giving him that (about a teaspoonful of juice in about 50 ml of water) - if your DS is younger than 3 months check with your HV.

Also, is it SMA gold top or the white @hungrier baby@ one? Because the white one seems to bung more babies up...

it's SMA gold... just that he was pooing for england when bf now it's slowed right down, don't mind as long as it's regular but sometimes it's a while in between then i get worried

IMO you may fine he is best suited to a formula milk with more cassein in...like Aptamil for example.

Aptamil doesn't have more casein in it, snowflakes...there is an 'extra hungry' one that does, but the standard one is whey-dominant.

Casein-domininant milks may increase the risk of constipation, as the protein in it is much 'tougher' to process, but of course individual babies may have individual reactions. No harm in trying different types to see what works best.

DD didn't like SMA at all. Was much better on Cow & Gate.

DD1 was ok on SMA Gold/White.

DD2 screamed for england on sms gold, switched at 5 weeks to cow & gate easy digest and is fine she goes every 2 or 3 days.

Sorry, was the Aptamil Easy Digest one I meant!

SMA was once described to me by a paed as 'polyfiller' type food as he'd experienced lots of babies getting clogged up on it. No idea how accurate he was tho..........

hmm might try him on aptamil sure they're all similar but maybe it's just finding the one that suits your particular baby?

Re orange juice - DS was about 4 months. FWIW old motherhood advice (ie in the 60s) used to be to give babies orange juice from about 3 months in general and it clearly didn't kill them all. But ask your HV and dilute it in water.
