Help! I've got one melon and a tomato!

Hi all,

I've reduced the number of feeds my 9 months old son is having - I'm breastfeeding. He's now well established on solids and is feeding from me twice now, once in the morning and once at night.

Problem is I think he's taking a shed load more at night cos my nightime boob is HUGE whilst my breakfast one is, well shall we say not!

Any advice that would help me to stop looking this ridiculous would be gratefully appreciated!!!

It is quite likely that he is feeding more at night than in the morning. Most babies drink different amounts at different times.

Why do you always feed from a specific side at each time?
If you feed equally from both sides at both times, the two will be used evenly.

In order to even them up now, you can feed him from the 'tomato' side much more than from the 'melon'. The tomato will get bigger with the extra use and the melon will get a bit smaller due to being rested.

If your DS prefers one side to the other, you may have to pump the less-used side to even them up. However, it doesn't sound like you have this problem.

Hi Ruth,

I've been feeding from each side at a specific time cos I was told to!

I guess as I 'm more than established now I can muck about a bit. I was just a tad worried about disrupting supply, fore/hind milk etc and that's why I've just fed from a single side at a time. He's eating well though so I think I'll just interrupt him mid drink to swap him over!

Thanks

Linda x

Hi Linda

It's very interesting that you were told to only feed from one side at each feed. I've never heard of that before.
Most advice seems to be to feed for about 10 minutes on each side, starting with the side on which you finished last time.

Don't worry about him being disturbed by the change over. I'm sure he'll get used to that very quickly.

Good luck with it!
