Stopping breastfeeding - 11months

Hi,

I think I've had enough of breastfeeding my nearly 1 year old DD but I don't know how to stop, for a few reasons:

  • She's a really frequent feeder (sometimes just for a few seconds!) so it's hard to pick a feed to drop to begin with.
  • I've no idea how much milk to give her.
  • I've had SUCH a problem with blocked ducts recently (never in the early weeks or months, weirdly), and I worry that introducing bottles will worsen this.

I've got a blocked duct now so I guess I shouldn't attempt anything until that's gone?

She's a bit hit and miss with solid foods so she will need a milk replacement.

How and where do I start 😫 can anyone help?

I did the same at 11 months. I just fed morning and night then did solid lunch, mid morning snack, mid afternoon snack and fed through the night (until I night weaned because I was up about 25673 times a night)

Does she drink from a cup? I’d go straight to that rather than bottles as cups are better for teeth.

Try to cut one feed at a time, and give a drink and snack instead. Distraction is key. Daytime feeds are easier to cut first.

Thank you Smile

@Nightmanagerfan she does drink water happily from an open cup/sippy cup, but when I've tried milk, she's dribbled it back out or tipped it up 🙄 I was thinking of trying bottles first and then quickly moving to cups once she's used to it, I think she might take a bottle more readily

I never expected it to be hard to stop!

What sort of milk have you tried? Cow's milk will taste odd initially, so we started with ready made follow on milk and then moved to cow's milk with a tiny bit of nesquik powder.

Maybe start with dropping day time feeds, when it's easier to distract/offer an alternative. I think bedtime feeds were the last ones to go.

Thanks @Nix32 . It was cows milk, and cold too, so really different from what she's used to 🤦🏻‍♀️ DS just went with the flow when he was tiny, DD is a lot more particular it seems. I'll try a few different ones and see how she goes Smile
