I breastfed my DS for 18 months with no problems.

DD is just 4 days old. She was in SCBU for the first few hours of her life but did not have formula.

During the day I'm feeding every 3 hours - she has to be woken for these. But she often cries on being latched on. She usually comes off at least once. She grimaces like she is tasting bike afterwards. And she is often sick. Night sleep is bad because of this. I'm.not winding her atm because she hates it.

The literature is overwhelming. Amy advice?! My milk came in yesterday.

Reflux or silent reflux? My baby had this and turned out to be allergic to cows milk. Once I cut that from my diet it got completely better. It's so hard when they're sick and colicky, could your HV or GP talk through things with you? X

I have an appt with my midwife tomorrow. DS is cows milk intolerant so it could be but it's very quick..

Was she early? Reflux is more common if so.

Or thrush? if she cries on latching it might be pain from thrush... but again seems very early for that.

Do you think you might have a fast letdown?

Possibly. What can I do?

I had such a fast letdown in the beginning! She would pull off, coughing and choking and everything would get soaked. Honestly, my biggest tips... dont use the hakka or anything to stimulate more production, the more engorged I was the further it sprayed, secondly I had a folded muslin under my boob, when she pulled off I flipped the muslin straight up to catch the spray. It got better at about 3 or 4 weeks when I was starting to regulate, then she started sleeping through so i would get it in the mornings again. But by 8 weeks, it was better and doesnt spray anymore.

In terms of reflux, we had this briefly when she was tiny. I raised the head of the tutti next to me to help at the time, and I let her sleep upright on me for 15mins plus after a feed, before putting her down to sleep.

The other thing you could do with having a fast letdown is latch baby on, wait till you feel your letdown and pull off yourself, spray into the muslin and latch baby on. This may be necessary if she starts to choke on it. It also avoids baby gulping to try and swallow which will lead to wind!

Xx

Lean back when feeding so that gravity helps slow things down a bit.

You’ll know if you have a fast let down as the milk will gush out like a fire hose and your DD will often pull off or choke as she can’t cope with the flow. If this is happening then lying down feeding (I found side lying easiest) is the best bet. Also if you are very engorged then hand express the first bit into a towel/sink before feeding, but only a little or you’ll stimulate more production.

I do think thrush is a possibility though - the antibiotics will have come through you to her, I think. Worth getting checked for. It’s a bugger to get rid of I believe, you have to be scrupulous about clean bras and pads etc and use the medicine on both of you.
