Infant feeding

What and how much your 5 month old eat?

Apart from milk.
My 5 month old is formula fed and has tried carrot puree, broccoli puree, courgette puree, banana. Been giving it for lunch but she does seem really hungry so think I'll also start giving some food in the evening too. Just interested how often other babies eat.

NHS advice is to not start weaning until 6 months so for the majority of babies nothing. Vegetables contain barely any calories compared to milk so I would just give more milk.

Agree with PP
Milk has all the calories they need, weaning early unless medically advised is madness.
Wait until 6 months then give real food and no purées. Why make life difficult for a few weeks? There’s no rush.

If she seems really hungry, the best thing to do is to increase her milk feeds at this age. Milk has far more nutrition and calories than veg puree which is mostly water. At the early stages of weaning, it's more about getting them used to different tastes and textures rather than filling them up.

He just ‘eats’ boobie milk- but judging by the size of him, gallons of the stuff- the greedy little rascal!

Personally I just fed formula until 6 months, as that's the advice given by the nhs.

At 5 months my baby only had milk.

We started weaning one week before DS turned 6 months - mainly because there is some evidence that early exposure to allergens is beneficial and food allergies run in both our families. We didn't move to two meals a day until about 7 1/2 months and waited until 9 months or so to introduce tea. DS is now 10 months and milk is still his main source of calories/nutrition. Some days he'll eat a lot of food, some days he's not fussed. He's learnt how to eat but milk is still the best thing for him.

Well my baby is a giant- he’s just 6m now and in either 9-12m or 12m+ clothing! He’s strong and has shown signs of readiness to start weaning for the last couple of weeks. He has a lot (I assume!) of breast milk but he’s been joining us at the table in his high chair and having a taste of whatever we’re eating. Keeps him entertained and quiet, briefly... I’m letting him chew something three times a day at mealtimes, so that he will gradually start eating more at those times and eventually be eating normal meals. If baby seems hungry though, give more milk- food is just for play and learning until the age of 1, really.

Yes 6 months is the recommendation as the oesophagus and digestive systems aren't usually developed enough to tolerate foods. Purées might go down ok but could harm their tummy, and is not sterilised.

How much formula per feed and in a 24 hr period? Is baby taking? You should increase this first before introducing foods.

Oh I don't live in UK so no NHS and was told at DDs check up few weeks ago we can start trying giving her food. So was just wondering how much others ate, oops. She does seem to be enjoying it so i guess I'll just carry on seeing as we have started and then try more things once she reaches 6 months

No whole nuts and no honey before 1yo, are the key things to remember!
