Infant feeding

10days old - How long should a breastfeed last?

My DD is 10 days old and gaining weight nicely. She is feeding every 2-3hrs for about 10-15mins. Is this normal - it's just I have read that others are feeding for an hour or so? She is latching on really well and she has a good burp in the middle (which comes up fairly quickly) and then a good wind at the end......

Sound like you're both doing fabulously!

If she's gaining weight well and seems happy and contented, I don't think you need to change anything... don't know loads about bf, but mine only fed for about that time per feed as well. I think the important thing is to be led by her, so if she's happy after 5mins, great, but if she's still going after 40mins, that's ok too! it's still early days.

Well done and Congratulations

Congratulations on your new baby.

I had one DS who fed for hours day and night at 10 days old and one who fed for 15 to 20 minutes once he got going - he made a big deal of getting round to latching on but once he did he was very efficient.

So long as she is putting on weight and happy I wouldn't worry too much. Count yourself lucky you have a baby who knows what she is doing.

Congratulations!

Agree with notnowbernard - I'm not an expert, merely fed ds, but if she's gaining weight than she is probably just an efficient feeder. I knew some of them but sadly ds was of the 'hour to hour and a half' school.
