Eh? Who on earth has told you that? The constituents of milk do change a little bit, over time, but not so that earlier milk becomes 'pretty much useless' - the milk will be absolutely fine for your baby, whenever she has it.

I've given DS 1 & 2 milk that had been frozen for months. In fact, DS1 had milk on his cereal expressed whilst feeding DS2 - no problems at all. It will be fine

tiktok - it was at a bf group today - a hv.

i think she meant that as the milk we produce gets richer - the earlier stuff wont have the nutrients???

if i give dd this - will she still be getting what she needs??

BM does change on an almost daily basis, so the milk for today will have antibodies in etc designed for any illnesses you're currently in contact with. However, it will always be better for your baby to have your bm, expressed and frozen previously or not, than formula. Formula is the same day in day out from birth to whenever, so doesn't change to suit the baby at all. Presumably you will be feeding 'directly' at certain times in the day, so she will be getting 'perfect' milk then.

Your HV needs retraining. Or training in the first place. Or shooting.

She's talking crap, I'm afraid.

Well done you for expressing - that's fab!

You might want to ask her why the milk bank cheerfully took almost 2 litres of my milk for preemies that I expressed when DS2 was 6mo...

lol hunker - this one was not my regular HV who seems a bit more sussed on bf - even if that means she admits when she doesnt have a clue. this one is a bit of a loose cannon and belive it or not - was leading a consultation on bf!!!

just counted my bags of milk- have 120!! - proud face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now off to find ways to make momscicles!!

Was going to mention milk banks as example of how you hv was talking bolleaux but hunker beat me to it

Just as well you found out before you binned the milk for the sake of the hv's continuing health... (I was very upset when dh spilled some ebm and that was probably only about 4oz).

maybe just some of the ones around the east end of glasgow????
not all are bad - maybe a bit outdated and given that the bf rates are so low round here - maybe dont have to do that much research.

120 bags
I have about 5 and thought i was doing
OK
When do you do all this expressing??
(Bearing in mind C is only about 140 days old!)
I count myself lucky if I can express 1 feed a day

weeonion · 16/09/2007 16:40

spb - i am express queen!! . i do tend to produce alot of milk and will get engorged ( hard as the road!!). before some feeds - i express off a wee bit and will keep this. some of the bags only have 60 / 70 mls in them - so not full feeds. i will still have to get up to express off during the night!

it is a veritable dairy round here!

I'd be too paranoid that I'd manage to leave the freezer door ajar again to have that much in the freezer. Do you have a back up generator just in case ?

I don't mind the expressing so much it's the cleaning and sterilising that I hate otherwise I'd probably have a bigger supply than I do.

weeonion · 18/09/2007 22:30

trixy - i now have 2 avents (bought one , given one), a medala electric - bought in the vain hope to claring blocked ducts and another battery powered one. i am a lazy cow so have my choice of clean ones.
as for the freezer door - i now have a baby lock on it so as dp cant get at it without me helping. i am a bit ocd about checking it!
