Prep machine - any good?

Hi. I'm not sure if I have started this thread in the right place (sorry). I just wondered if anyone else had bought the tommee tippee prep machine and found it useful? I have heard mixed reviews from others, so just after some more opinions please. Thanks in advance

I had one last time as couldn't breastfeed for various reasons and it was an absolute lifesaver! I loved it and wouldn't hesitate to get another

Yup, best thing ever. People will be along to say it goes mouldy - just make sure you clean it regularly.

My sister and friends swear by it - I'm definitely getting one when I switch from BF to formula, I say go for it!

I had one last time and it was brilliant. Will definitely use it again when I stop breastfeeding this time round.

Are you planning to try breastfeeding first? If so I wouldn't buy one yet but if it doesn't work out for you for any reason and you decide to switch to formula, buy one then.

Taking into consideration the various baby related gadgets that are available now, but not when my own dc were born, I think the prep machine is definitely the one thing I wish we'd had. When I think about the time it took to make the whole day's bottles each morning (was regarded as acceptable back then), the storage space in the fridge, the time to re-heat when it was time for a feed... When dgs was born, I admit we were sceptical about the machine. But after the first time we saw it in action we were convinced. And then, when DIL was hospitalized for several weeks and we were looking after dgs we found it an absolute godsend.
As others have said, you must clean it thoroughly and regularly and must make sure you change the filter as recommended. As long as you do that, I'd say go for it.

They are not recommended by the NHS, as the machine does not make the milk safely. Formula powder is not sterile and needs to go into water that is at least 70 degrees. The shot of water that the prep machine delivers is not of sufficient quantity to hold its temperature, therefore does not sterilise the powder completely.

They are not advised against by the NHS either to be fair. If they were they wouldn't be being sold.

We found it amazing. No problems with cleanliness.

Brilliant, lifesaver for night feeds in particular. Mine broke when I use the cleaning setting one day and they sent me another straight away.

There isn't actually any substantiated scientific evidence to prove that the machines are unsafe, just an invalidated university experiment conducted in 2016.
The use of such machines are not recommended by advisory bodies, but neither are the same bodies telling us that they are not safe and must not be used. That's because there is no validated proof.
My DD used one and it absolutely was a godsend. She always put the formula powder in the bottle first and gave it a really good shake once the hot shot was added. Believe me, the bottle is so hot at this stage!

Sleepyheads report. This makes for very interesting reading to those who say sleepyheads are not safe. The scientific evidence doesn't exist to support this statement.

Agree @Soontobe60 - there is no scientific evidence to state that the perfect prep should not be used, hence why the NHS doesn't counter its use.

Therefore no need for the OP's thread to be derailed by unkind posters accusing parents using various baby products of laziness or lack of care based on 0 evidence.

I bought one but dd wouldn't drink powdered formula only pre made bottled stuff. Cost a fortune. If she had it would have been brilliant

Offering a different opinion is not derailing the thread.

Giving formula rather than breast milk is already increasing the risk of SIDS, infection and disease.

Even if there is the smallest doubt that these products are unsafe, why take that risk. Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

I also had one for my daughter right in the middle of the mouldy machine hype. I cleaned it as per the instructions and replaced the filters with the tommee tippee ones (apparently some people were just using cheap ones which may not have helped) and had absolutely no issues and a very healthy baby x

I wouldn’t use a product not recommended as safe just to save time.
