Being a complete non expert in this subject I am asking for advice on behalf of my brother...the issue is as follows

my brother & SIL have a 3 month old baby girl, born 6 weeks early, she was exclusively BF until about 3 weeks ago when she went on to combined BF and FF, the reason for this was so my SIL could have a 'drink or two of an evening'

However my brother is concerned that she is drinking 2 large glasses of wine a night and then breastfeeding DD about 5 hours later..she says the HV has advised that the alcohol would be out of her system by now ..is this right?

Is there any info my brother could easily access ( good websites etc ?) that he could pass on to her ( I do not want to get involved in the ''oh you don't want to do it like that' annoying sister in law routine!!) apparently he is tries to discuss the feeding routine etc she gets very defensive so he wants to broach it more subtly ...

Also on a side issue, shoudl a pre term baby be treated as their actual age or their age from due date IYKWIM? with ref to Calpol dosage etc

Her DOB is her actual start date if you like. My DS was born 4 weeks early and I was told to expect him to meet all his milestones at the same time as the 'average' but tbh I found those 4 weeks did make a difference and it was 10 weeks at least before we got any smiles and 7 months before he was sitting. His weight charts are corrected for 4 weeks though. All babies are different and they will all get there in the end.

Hope you brother finds the links useful, and don't worry its a SIL's job to add her opinion wether its wanted or not

Should I avoid drinking alcohol while I'm breastfeeding?

Drinking alcohol does not seriously harm the baby, and mums should not stop breastfeeding simply because they have had an alcoholic drink.

But this study suggests that drinking alcohol may reduce a mum's milk production in the short term.1 More research is needed to confirm this.

If you do choose to drink alcohol while breastfeeding, the best advice is to not drink shortly before feeding your baby.3
