HELP think I have my 7mo off BM :(

Hi. I’ve just started expressing BM for my 7mo who has been exclusively breastfed. I’m worried I have given her some milk that has gone bad. I stored some milk in the fridge for 4 days in a normal milk bottle. I now think maybe you are not meant to store in bottles rather bags?

I didn’t realise until after she drank it it smelled and tasted sour. I am worried now, is it possible for her to get food poisoning from off bm? Thanks

You can store milk if anything as long as it is clean and has been sterilised

You might have high lipase in your milk. Milk can be stored for something like 7 days in the fridge

You can store breast milk in a sterilised containeror in special breast milk storage bags:

  • in the fridge for up to 8 days at 4C or lower (you can buy fridge thermometers online) – if you are not sure of the temperature of your fridge, or it is higher than 4C, use it within 3 days

  • for 2 weeks in the ice compartment of a fridgefor up to 6 months in a freezer, if it is -18C or lower

Breast milk that's been cooled in the fridge can be carried in a cool bag with ice packs for up to 24 hours.

Storing breast milkin small quantities will help to avoid waste. If you're freezing it, make sure you label and date it first.

You haven't poisoned her don't worry. Glass is one of the best things to store milk in. Breast milk is good in the fridge for 5-8 days but best to store at the back and not in the fridge door. If you do have high lipase you can scald the milk first and then freeze it and it will not taste sour. X

Just reread and saw you meant a baby milk bottle not a glass milk bottle, baby bottle is fine too 😄

I would store bm in storage bottles with tight fitting lids rather than feeding bottles, which I’m guessing won’t be air tight.

I bought a pack of Sterifeed storage bottles quite cheaply.

The milk can smell/taste sour without being off and as long as your baby will take it, the sourness isn’t a problem.

Thank you for all your replies they have put my kind at ease. I know it’s within limits on NHS website etc I just couldn’t believe how sour it smelled when I went to wash it out !
