Bad reaction to new Aptamil formulation?

Hi all

My baby (9.5 months) is having Aptamil 2 follow on and has been on Aptamil since 3 months after I stopped exclusively breastfeeding and introduced combination.

After they have changed the formulation (a few weeks ago now) she has had a bad tummy (runny number 2's and not like her!)

Has anyone else had this issue? I wonder if it's worth changing brand or if that would cause more of an issue... she's been on the new formulation about a week.

Any options appreciated!

No need for follow on milk at all. It's a marketing ploy as the formula companies aren't allowed to market stage one milk. Stage 1 is perfectly adequate until 1 year when you can switch onto cow's milk

Follow on milk contains thickener to artificially fill tummies. It’s not needed for over 1s and is not suitable at all for under 1s.

I don't think it would harm to change brand. When we combination fed we bought different brands every time. It didn't cause any issues. I think this idea that you must stick to one brand comes from the manufacturers who want you to keep buying their product and nobody else's.

I agree first milk is fine and it is better to stick with first milk, even after 6 months. Follow on doesn't necessarily contain thickeners, but its make up is less closely regulated than first milk and first milk is suitable throughout the first year.

Health visitor told us no need to change to 2. Stay on stage 1 and certinly don't go on stage 3 as it isn't regulated

I wasn't asking for people's opinions on whether follow on milk is suitable, if I wanted opinions on that, I would have asked. My question was about switching brands due to a new formulation of Aptamil.

@GrumpyHoonMain if follow on milk wasn't 'suitable for under 1s at all' it wouldn't legally be able to be sold.

All - I switched to follow on milk following doctors advise as the vitamin levels are different in follow on. I would not need to go on to stage 3 as cows milk will be sufficient after 1 years old.

@BertieBotts I think you could be right about the marketing tool, although I have heard the different ingredients in brands can mess with little tummies which is why I've stuck with Aptamil - who knows, this could be a marketing tool too!

Thanks I will consider changing brands.

This is bollocks. There are no thickeners and is suitable for 6 months+ . You dont have to switch but I did as it was cheaper and you can get offers on it. I switched from aptamil to cow & gate as it was cheaper too

Lots of things are not safe or suitable for babies but are still sold for them eg cot bumpers.

Oh my god yes! Massive explosive poops when she has never had a poosplosion before! We got an old formula from Sainsbury's last week and suddenly she went back to normal. New updated formula again today and already having huge runny poos again. So glad it's not just us!! No idea what to do though because Aptamil has changed to meet ?national guidelines/standards so surely all of the other formula brands have too?
