Cold grapes for a toddler?

Hi Mumsnet,

My mother in law just told me off for feeding cold grapes from the fridge (washed, cut in half) to my 1.5 year old son for breakfast, on the basis that this would make him ill. He does not have a food allergy to grapes and he loves eating them. Please can someone explain how the act of eating cold food makes you ill?
Thank you,
Davethree

It doesn't your MIL is talking nonsense. I do cut my DD grapes into quarters just because I'm really scared of the choking risk.

It doesn't she's being weird. Just please cut them up OP, children can choke on a whole one, it's usually about the size of their windpipe.

It literally says in the OP that they were cut up.

@jinglejanglefish it says cut in half in the OP... any bigger than quarters presents a choking hazard. Same with cherry tomatoes.

It must be some old wives tale nonsense.
Maybe she's thinking of pips in them. DH grew up terrified of them as apparently you definitely get appendicitis is you eat a grape seed. My old relatives used to say this when I was small 🙄. Perhaps MIL has failed to notice the invention of seedless grapes!
Everywhere you go small children eat grapes.
Next time she says it...ask her why. See what mumbo jumbo she comes up with and give us all a laugh.

Quarters are also a choking risk just half is fine. Op I don't know what your mil is on about don't concern yourself about it.

My gran used to tell us that trees would grow in our tummies if we ate apple pipsShock

Taken from the Child Accident Prevention Turst website:

we advise that grapes should be chopped in half lengthways and ideally in quarters

So, I guess quarters isn't necessary as such but I do it just in case.

You are only being unreasonable cutting grapes in half.. they should be quartered at least x

Fair enough I was told years ago quarters were also a risk

Any size is obviously a choking risk but the smaller the piece- the less of the entire airway is blocked if it gets trapped in there. Would think thats common sense but now you know x

Cold grapes and frozen grapes (not for small children unless quartered) are yum- it's like frozen sorbet! And frozen ones make the perfect ice cubes for wine to stop it diluting.

Thank you everyone. I feel much better now!

Yes, I will be sure to cut the grapes in quarters. I will try to ask MIL about it, but she does not speak English and I will just get a stream of incomprehensible Polish. If I can record and translate this I will let you know. Thank you all for your help.
