Formula for constipation?

mummywingingit · 06/03/2019 18:32

I'm formula feeding my baby (unable to breast feed)

My baby is on cow and gate - has been since 3 days old and is now 4 weeks...it's suits him well except for he only now poi's once a day and every evening withers around clearly in pain in his tummy.

We're debating changing his milk as heard a few people say their baby got constipation on c&g.

Can anyone recommend a good formula to help with constipation?

Other wise he is well on his milk. Rarely sick, just a small amount of spit up if any, feeds well and wee's plenty, although his wee is always smelly.

Thanks

Hi @mummywingingit we used HiPP organic and had no problems HV and midwives thought he was breastfeeding as he pooped like a demon Grin. I highly recommend it. Good luck

@mommybear1 thanks! HIPP is what I'm looking at, but can't find reviews related to constipation, just reflux and colic.
He had HIPP in hospital and for those two days was okay, but guess two days is only a short time. I hate seeing him in pain every night, and his poo smells like vinegar...it's horrid!

@mummywingingit no problem. I can understand it's so hard when they can't tell you, I don't know if it made any difference but I used to do baby yoga which had a lot of focus on constipation (YouTube was my saviour) so I'd recommend that to help with some of the wind. Has your HV given you any advice to the smell? DS' poo never smelt of vinegar not sure if that is due to the formula? We also found the ready made stuff better than the powder when DS was little apparently it's a smoother mix but we didn't know that at the time 😬.

Have you tried using the ready made cartons every few days they always made DS go

Oh that's a thought...never heard of that with already made, so may get some to try if it helps them go. At his check with GP will mention it to see if they have any ideas.

I will YouTube baby yoga as willing to try anything to help him be comfortable.

I'm seeing HV on the 14th. She saw us at 10 days old and then booked for 6 weeks old...no number left which is odd, so will get it off her when she comes .

I think the smell is from the formula as it has a horrid smell when pouring it away, and he has strong smelling wee too.

Yes it's a good idea to try the occasional ready made carton which can often help. When your little one goes is the poo soft? It's not unusual for them to strain and writhe as the poo is moving down but obviously not if he's getting distressed with it every time.

@swizzlestix yes it's a soft consistency every time and he goes once a day so wondering whether that is just going to be normal for him

That's encouraging if it's not a hard or bulky poo, bless him pooing can be such a pain literally! Hope things improve
