We've spent weeks researching and testing breast pumps and bottles in real homes with real families. Read our baby feeding bottle and breast pump reviews to find out which ones were awarded Mumsnet Best.

Start using Mumsnet PremiumWeaning from EBF to bottles of expressed milk
(3 Posts)Hello,
My LO is 11 weeks and EBF at the moment.
I want to gradually wean her onto bottles of expressed breastmilk during the day as she nurses constantly (feeding & comfort sucking), whilst keeping the first morning feed and the night feeds at the breast.
I've read articles about 'dropping a feed' but as she nurses so frequently I'm unsure how to do this - should I limit her comfort nursing too?
Firstly, she may be the kind of baby that wants loads of small bottles, so you might not find more time doing it this way.
Pick a time you want to give her a bottle, perhaps after a nap where you've expressed, then hope she goes a while without feeding before wanting the breast again. Once you're both comfortable with that switch do the same at another time.
It's up to you if you want to stop comfort nursing, there's no need unless you want to but if you do decide to maybe do it separately to moving to bottles or introduce a dummy, to reduce the changes going on at once.
Is she actively feeding for most of the feed? Have you thought about trying breast compressions to encourage her to take the milk more quickly?
