Hi I'm a new Mum my daughter is just over 3 weeks old and we have recently switched from breast to formula (four days ago) she has only had one poo in 3 days and she is terribly uncomfortable and in pain. It's breaking my heart. Anyone got any helpful advice?

Try calling the NCT breastfeeding helpline. They are expert counselors who help on all kinds of baby feeding issues.

0300 330 0700.

Good luck! Thanks

Perhaps try switching formula? We moved to Cow & Gate for babies with colic and constipation and it seems to help.

Just for info, my DD didn’t poo for four days and they referred her to hospital and gave her a suppository. Her issue was not getting enough food from the breast so won’t be the same for you, but would suggest ringing health visitor or your midwife/hospital contact as they took it quite seriously - they won’t mind you asking at all.

You can also try giving your DD a small amount of cooled down boiled water to get things moving. Other tips were to ‘cycle’ baby’s legs to help her muscles, putting olive oil or Vaseline on her bum and leaving her without a nappy on, and to gently massage her tummy under her belly button (although my DD hated that).

But good luck - I know how heartbreaking it is to watch them cry and feel powerless to do anything to do much to help.

My friend was advised by a paediatrician to put a couple of drops of prune juice in the formula. It worked!

I was advised by a paeditriciab to use probiotic drops called BioGaia - my dd never pooed naturally, we’d have to use a pessary once a week to help her out.
It worked the first day of using it and we used for about 3 months, stopped, she now poos healthily and frequently.
The only “miracle” product I’ve come across since having a baby
