Infant feeding

Practical question please; Buy a box of formula powder for one feed per day?

My 16wo ds has one ff per day. I’m perfectly happy with this as, due to lots of problems with bfing, it looked like we would never manage to still be bf at all by this stage.

Anywho, we have been using the little pre-mixed bottles of formula, but I’m wondering if now that he has bigger feeds it might be worth buying a box of powder. I’ve looked online but I can’t see anything to say how many ounces you get per box of formula. Ds has about 200ml per day, so about 7oz. I think the boxes last 4 weeks after opening.

Ds would have 7oz per day, 7 days a week, so 49oz per week, times four is approx 196oz / scoops for four weeks.

Has anyone got any idea if that would use up a box of formula please?

Each scoop weighs roughly 4.5g. I'm no good at maths but I'm sure you could work it out that way by how much a box weighs.

882g a month? Not sure how much a box is.

We get about 30 6oz feeds per box (about 5 days). So that's about 180oz milk per box (ish).
As far as I can work out, that would mean a box would last you just over 3 weeks.

Most formula is about £10-12 per box, and individual cartons are about 80p, so for a formula feed every day, you'd still be cheaper buying a box than buying a ready made carton for every day of the week, even if you throw some of the box away at the end of 4 weeks.

Aptamil is 900g a box - I just packed one in my luggage!

You’ll have to throw away the rest of the box four weeks after opening but yes, it will be cheaper. However, be prepared for your DS to not like the powdered formula after being used to ready made.

A box of formula used to last is about 5-6 days once DS was 6 x 6oz a day, so from that I'd guess around 30 feeds per tub.

You might end up with a small amount left at the end of the 4 weeks, but you'd use most of it. Definitely cheaper than the individual bottles.

Oh so that’s about perfect I think. If he’s having about 882g for 4 weeks and there’s 900g in a box that’s great. Thanks for your help. I’ll buy some today. Save a fortune.

That's why we switched to Hipp, my daughter has one bottle a day and the Hipp boxes come with two sachets in them so much less wastage! I also taste tested it and preferred it and my little girl seems to as well!

Thanks @whitehouse. Top tip!

I also think it said somewhere when I was googling, that they do a smaller box too.
