Not sure if 9 month old is having enough milk???

Hi there,

As the title says- I'm not sure my 9 month old is getting enough milk. My HV is also off long term sick so I'm waiting to hear back from someone else from the team.

My DS has always been a rubbish sleeper but will go through phrases where we start to head in the right direction and then he does a massive u turn and is up a lot of the night.

Anyway, his eating routine looks like this-

7am- bf
8am- porridge/weetabix with fruit and made with 2 oz of formula

11am- formula- around 2-4 oz (I really have to battle with this.

12.30pm- lunch. Anything from soup and bread to avocado on toast. Lunch can be picky finger foods or a pasta with homemade sauce.

2.30ish- bf

3.30 snack (toast/fruit/cheese chunks/melty sticks)

5pm- tea- a good comfort food type meal like shepherds pie/ chicken stew/ chicken curry.

6 30pm- bf

10pm- formula- 6oz at the most.

I sometimes alternate the 11 and 2.30 between formula and bf. I'm trying to gradually add formula feeds in the day for when he goes to nursery.

I may be way off and be worrying he's not drinking enough milk but it just didn't seem much from me adding up the amount of formula?

Thanks!

It looks to me like your LO is getting plenty of nutrition it his meals as well as still bf so I wouldn't be too worried if you think he's not taking as much formula as you think he should. Truth is you can't really tell when you're bf how much the baby takes in so he's probably getting plenty of fluids as long as nappies are wet and all that I'm sure he's getting just what he needs. 😁

Thanks Tumilnaughts I've had it drilled into me that "milk is the primary source of nutrition" and "food is just for fun until 1". I knew I was probably overthinking it. He gets plenty of fruit and veg along with protein, per day. If only he would sleep! Grin

If his weight and general growth is normal, then he's well nourished. Mine was never keen on formula when weaning from the breast but ate yogurts and cheese happily. Eventually she took to semi-skimmed around 10 months. Full fat gave her diarrhoea and she was huge and didn't need the calories. If he's eating plenty of other foods, he'll get all he needs. If you want you could add in multivitamins with iron because formula is fortified.

Dd was down to a Morning, afternoon and evening feed by 10mo. I'd expect the reason you're struggling with the 11am is it's not needed.

Mine never wanted formula so I always gave water after 6 months (as well as breast milk and food). Sounds like yours is doing fine.
The sleeping will come eventually. Mine started sleeping through at 15 months.good luck.

Thanks guys. All really helpful. Whether I do the formula feed at 11 or 2.30 I seem to struggle to get it in him. But as of this last week he's started having a snack and loves it so he's definitely preferring his grub! He's not been weighed in a while but he's looking great and started crawling this last week!

I make my own yogurt and he can't get enough of it. He'd probably have about 7oz of yogurt at each feed instead Grin
