Colief Drops?

Hi,
DS is nearly 5 weeks old and from around 2-3 weeks old was very unsettled during the evenings from 4-5pm feed until he fed again at 9-10pm. We started on infacol and initially saw good results however last weekend he cried all evening and was a much more painful cry than before And this was the case for both Sunday and Monday evening so started to use colief drops on Tuesday. He’s now had 3 full days of using these and he is now ten times worse. Very restless and unsettled all day and will only sleep for longer than 20mins if we’re out in his car seat or at nighttime. He seems to wake himself up in pain and I feel it’s his tummy troubling him. He passes wind constantly and very very smelly since the colief. He only poo’s every 2-3 days which he has done since day 5 and always been loose which has always concerned me as this is when he normally gets himself into such a state! But all my concerns are being dismissed by health professionals. I am going to stop using the colief now and see if this helps but just wondered if anyone else had experience of using these drops and had similar problems? I’d much rather go back to having the odd evening with a few hours crying than all day!

Given what you’ve said, i’d stop using them too.

How is your son fed? If ff , which bottles?

Is he bottle fed? My son had the exact same symptoms as your little one. I tried Colief, Infacol and Infant Gaviscon given to me by my GP but none of them worked. The only thing that did work was changing his formula to "HiPP Organic". It was an absolute game changer after that! He was a completely different baby. I also changed bottles to MAM anti-colic and we didn't need anything else as that reduced his wind drastically and the HiPP formula is gentle on their tummies and helps them to pass wind and poo easily. I would personally do that if he is on formula other than the one I've mentioned. X

He’s ff on aptamil and using the nuby bottles. Since we stopped using the drops last Friday he is a much happier baby and back to his usual self. Still has his moments but we now think this is linked to him getting overtired etc. He still doesn’t poo quicker than 2-3 days and still explosive and ruins his clothes within minutes of him doing it but will mention this at his 8 week check with the GP as I still can’t think of any other reason why he is like this?

As I said it is probably because of the formula he is on x

@MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup how did you change formulas? Did you mix the two together and slowly introduce it that way or just change over straight away? Done some research and think it might well be worth giving Hipp Organic a try!

@charley39 I changed his formula straight over to HiPP. No messing about x

@charley39 no worries hun. They usually sell them at Boots, Sainsbury's and Morrison's. Tesco don't stock them anymore I believe! I may be wrong though x

@MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup do they sell the ready made bottles at all? Would be quite keen to try this first so I’m not left with a box of powder and we’re currently using ready made aptamil as finding it easier atm! I’ve looked online but can’t seem to find who has them?

@charley39 yes Hun they do sell ready made bottles. The ones with the teats on are in Boots, but if you want to buy the bottles that you pour into another bottle then they sell that in the shops I listed above. The downside to them ones is that they don't have a lid! You have to cut it open (similar to a carton of juice), but just a very minor inconvenience x

@MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup thank you! Just sent my DH on a trip to find some but seems the ready made is few and far between, everyone out of stock! Will have to just buy the powder I think!

@MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup well the milk has done the job for his poo. Thought it has completely worked as for two days we had a happy little baby but now he’s back to screaming every evening and sometimes during the day if he refuses sleep. We’ve tried switching to mam bottles and also using gripe water now which helps to bring up bigger burps. Think we will just have to ride it out and hope that it goes away soon! Thanks for checking in on us Smile

@charley39 good news about the poo but shame that he's back to screaming bless him! It could be something entirely different then? My little one did so well on it but I guess every baby is different and what works for one may not work for another. At least you gave it a good shot! Fingers crossed he gets over this soon. X

This happened to my DC for 3 months and we kept getting dismissed by health visitors, even had it down as teething (at 6 weeks!). GP finally agreed to refer to paediatrician who diagnosed cows milk protein allergy, changed to prescribed formula (nutramigen) and completely different baby- all positive. Finally happy, settled, no longer screaming in pain at random, pooping more regularly. Just a thought?

@guiltymummygalore I had thought of this after consulting google. He’s got his 8 week check next week so will discuss with doctor as I do think he has a few of the symptoms of an allergy but I’m not sure if I’m just looking too much into it. We’ve had a better few days with the crying only briefly in the evening so fingers crossed we are heading in the right direction. I’m sure we will be back to square one no doubt! Did your little one show many signs?

He would randomly scream and pull his legs up which indicated it was stomach cramps or stomach related and found it very hard to pass stools despite them being soft. He's now almost 11 months and back on normal formula and tolerating yoghurt and cheese (but not full fat cows milk just yet). Worth a shot, nothing to lose. Let us know how you get on

@guiltymummygalore so we had a week free of any screaming evenings and it was heaven! Last night however he started again and has become so restless during feeds again. Bringing up small amounts of milk, hard to wind and has stopped pooing as regular. The doctors were not concerned with him at all. Now I’m all out of ideas!
