Shall I change formula?

Hello!

My DS is 6 weeks old, he has been FF Aptamil from birth but from 2 weeks onwards he's been a fussy feeder - often gulping and choking on the milk, spitting it out and crying during feeds. He is also very colic-y in the evenings between 5-10pm and really suffers from trapped wind (he's impossible to burp) he has bad flatulence that wakes him constantly and pretty loose poos that take him ages of straining to produce.

We've pretty much tried combinations of all of the following to help - Infacol, dentinox, gripe water, colief, gaviscon and nothing has made much difference. We do have a doctors appointment booked for him on 20th March (couldn't get anything earlier!) to discuss everything but in the meantime do you think a change of formula could help?

I just wondered if anyone had faced similar problems and had success with a formula change.

They are all fairly similar but you might well find another brand suits him better. I remember one specific type of follow on formula made DS1 throw up for example.

Of course, it may be that he needs a special formula (lactose intolerance/dairy allergy maybe?) so the doctors appointment may well be useful.

Sounds like you are describing my DD, we tried absolutely everything like you have, in the end we switched to Aptamil reflux milk and she was like a new baby overnight. Got nothing to lose by trying OP. Good luck Thanks

If you do decide to change to the reflux you will need much bigger teats as the milk is very thick, we had to get size 4. Also, you don't add the powder to boiling water like you to traditional formula as it has a thickening gum in which reacts to the boiled water and clumps. It tells you on the side of the tub how to make it up. We just assumed it was made the same way as normal formula at first and wondered why it was all lumps and clumps!

Hi @WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream Thanks for your reply!

I'm not sure about trying the reflux milk without speaking to the doctor first. Plus I've heard that its very thick and you have to use hot water (we use cool, boiled - I know its against advice) but I will certainly bear that in mind if another 'normal' formula doesn't work.

You don't use hot water with the reflux milk, it makes it congeal.

Hope you get sorted at the doctor, good luck Thanks

Hi OP! I'm sorry to hear you're little ds is having such a tough time with it - we had the something similar with our son! Aptamil didn't agree with him at all, you could even feel his little tummy gurgling, so switched him to Cow & Gate comfort milk and changed bottles to MAM. I know you're not supposed to change everything at once but we were desperate, hated seeing my baby in so much discomfort. Good luck, I hope you find what works for you both.
