I was having a horrible time trying to bf DD2 and posted as littlemonkiesmum here and here
It's all got so much better, I'm so glad I stuck it out. DD is now 100% bf, feeding every 2 to 4 hours, and although she is getting too much foremilk (green nappies etc) she is gaining weight well and seems happy with the bf. Thanks for all your posts and all the fab advice given on other posts, which have been a tremendous help.
I can give up when we're both ready now, rather than feeling forced in to it as though I've failed. Aiming for 1 year, but who knows?

Great, scree....and BTW, if your baby is fine, green nappies really do not matter one iota, and there is no such thing as 'too much foremilk' if there is no problem!! It's just a variation

Tiktok, while I remember can I ask you about this. It was one of my problems when I was feeding dd. Things were going sort of OK in the early days and then mw said to me "ooohh, green poo. You have an incorrect latch, you have to fix that otherwise dd won't be getting enough nourishment, too much foremilk etc, etc.". This had a massive effect on me and things started going wrong from then on. So does green poo not matter that much? Just so I know for next time....

twofalls, no green poo does not matter, unless it appears with other symptoms indicating something wrong (eg sore nipples, baby miserable, baby always unsettled, baby not thriving). Maybe there was something else going on to make the midwife remark on it???

Thanks for replying tiktok. she was very, very unsettled but she was back up to birth weight pretty quickly. HV said that she was little for a 2 week overdue baby and that she was probably very, very hungry so I was feeding her constantly (literally). After the green poo worry I started getting very sore nipples (the top came off one and I know that was a latch problem) and I felt very anxious because she stopped putting on weight and kept coming off the breast screaming after feeding for about and hour. I was pumping in between feeding (so really was attached to something for about 20 hours a day!) but couldn't express a drop. I got fantastic support from the baby cafe/bfc but a tummy bug (mine) at 6 weeks just about finished me off, I was exhausted and had nothing left and I very reluctantly gave up. It was awful, I cried buckets. However, I have to say after I gave up I started enjoying my baby which I then felt even more guilty about lol.

In hindsight, I think it was a culmination of events but I am thinking about number 2 and really, really want to get it right next time around!

twofalls, I agree - you had a latch problem. The initial surge of milk was enough to get your baby's weight up, but after that, you needed a better positioning and attachment to a) stop you being sore b) get the weight on your baby c) keep her happy and settled.

The bug you then got would not have affected a brilliant milk supply, or no more than marginally and temporarily, but as you say, it finished you off and drained the last bit of energy you had. The poor latch should have been spotted early on, and nipped in the bud. Next time you'll be watchful and will have a better experience, I'm sure
