Infant feeding

My demand BF DD never demands milk anymore!

My DD is 8.5 months and I have always demand fed. She has always had a great appetite. She is now on 3 solid meals a day and has been for 2 months. However in the last week she only seems interested in the breast when she first wakes up. After that she hardly takes any milk. Because she is allergic to cows milk my milk is her main source of calcium and I am worried she isn't getting enough.

Her typical day at the mo is:

6am full BF from both sides
7am banana and toast plus 25ml water
12 noon avocado on toast and fruit for desert plus 25ml water
12.30 very half hearted BF before nap (offered rather than demanded and used more as a comfort than a feed)
3.30 pm rice cakes and 25ml water
5.45pm salmon steak, pasta pesto and broccoli plus 30ml water
7pm half BF before bed.

Thats not much milk is it? She is happy and lively though and very chubby. Should I try and get her to drink more?

What about expressing and offering her milk in a cup?

Also, you could bf before offering solids.

Thanks Cazee. Its not the delivery mechanism that is the problem! (i.e. she likes the breast and refuses cups and bottles). It is just that she is not that interested in milk at the mo. Maybe I should prioritise milk before meals. Which is most impt at this age?

No help, sorry, but I'm in the same position (ds is 9 months next week), posted about it a while ago and it's still the same. I'm told it's not unusual for them to go through a less interested bfing phase around this age, though. I've been concerned about it but can't see what else I can do. With his childminder (3 days a week) he has started to refuse his afternoon EBM bottle and as it's so warm she has offered water instead, which he downs happily. Like your dd, he seems happy and thriving so I'm trying to relax.

Glad to know its not abnormal at this age Bitzer. I just worry about the calcium and that my milk might dry up. But I guess I will try and relax too.
