Advice - Breastfeeding & Weight Gain

Afternoon all,

E is 12 weeks, exclusivly breastfed but has short frequent feeds (every 2 hours for 5-7 mins). I took her to be weighed yesterday and she has only gained 9.5oz in 4 weeks, she has dropped from the 25th to 9th centile. HV made a point of telling me to bring her back in 2 weeks to get her re-checked.

Now everything in me is telling me she is fine, she has gained some weight, she is happy, alert, sleeps well between feeds and sleeps fabulously at night.

She has colic so gets very uncomfortable and fidgety but it’s niggling at me that she might not be getting enough.....and that’s why she is unsettled after feeds and not gaining ‘enough’ weight.

Your view........

It sounds like you're doing all the right things so
I think I would try a process of elimination to see why baby is not gaining.
Is she having frequent wet & dirty nappies?
Are you nursing from one side until she has reached the rich hind milk which is full of calories and like a desert?
If you are switching sides too quickly then she may be missing out on this.
I was told that the first let down of milk is like a drink then dinner & desert follows.
Sometimes if baby is just getting the first milk this can cause wind and make her colicky?

It sound s like you are doing everything right. How might I increase Baby’s Weight Gain is a good article as it gives lots of reassurance. Look at Baby, not the Scales by Dr Jay Gordon is a good article too.

Is there a Bfing Support Group nearby? It might help to spend some+time with some other Bfing mums and have a BrewSmile
