Infant feeding

Sudden diminished supply in one breast

I have been ebf DD for four months. Yesterday she seemed to fuss at my left breast, like she wasn't getting anything. I gave it a squeeze and nothing came out so I switched her to the right. After about 30 seconds I had a very tingly letdown on the left so I switched her back and thought it was fine, just a delayed letdown.

This morning the same thing happened but she still didn't feed much from the left so after she finished I tried pumping. I got a few meagre drops. I started her again in the left for net next feed, she seemed to get a little then started fussing. I pumped again and got almost nothing.

The breast itself seems fine, no pain or lumps. My nipple is slightly purple and a bit sensitive when I pump but I'm not sure if this is because I've been fiddling with it all day Hmm

I rang a support group, the consultant said it's very unusual and although she could safely say what it wasn't, she wasn't sure why it was happening.

Both me and DD seem fine, she has plenty of wet nappies. No medications. Eating reasonably well and drinking lots. Right breast is still ticking along ok.

Can anyone help, please? I'm worried this is the beginning of something bad :(

I noticed that my right boob started producing less milk than left (I notice because I pump a lot - I'm back at work). I think it's because I find it easier to feed on that side. Left boob seems to be compensating though. My LO is not hungry anyway Smile

I would keep offering the right breast as you have been and just keep an eye. I've heard stories of people successfully feeding from only one side throughout, so I would not start to worry yet.

Thank you Dragonfree. When did it start to happen with you?
