Infant feeding

One month old expressed milk and breast feeding

My one month old had jaundice requiring treatment and lost a lot of weight in her first few days so I was told to express milk to give to her in a bottle after breastfeeding. We have done this for a month now and she is thriving - put on weight, happy calm baby. She has had difficulties feeding but now seems to be at a point where she latches on more often than not, but only feeds half-heartedly. When the bottle is offered she downs 120ml. My question is whether any of you have similar experience and how I could up the breastfeeding and reduce the bottles with the least disruption - to the baby and to my supply... thanks in advance!

So glad she’s thriving for you. If you want to reduce top ups, I’d talk to one of the Bfing Helplines who can support you with this, have you got the numbers?

This article on Kellymom talks about Weaning from formula top ups but I’m not sure if the same applies to ebm top ups. Really do think it’s best to talk it through with a BFC as I clearly don’t seem to have a clue Grin

Congratulations great news and well done for your hard work, pumping is serious work 😀

I had the same scenario with my first but he couldn't latch to me at all (tongue tie) so I got help from a lactation consultant to help us teach baby to latch to a nipple shield. Basically the technique involved me increasing my milk supply so I had a fast let down and quick flow to mimic the bottle. BUT I would only recommend you try this under supervision of a consultant because I ended up with oversupply which caused another set of problems

Basically persevere with whichever technique you choose & remember you e done amazing to come this far already
