Mastitis, owwww! How long is recovery supposed to take??

Had mastitis in my right boob 3 weeks ago due to improper positioning. DD and I sorted out the positioning, and my boob now seems to be draining properly. Had antibiotics too.

The redness has gone down, but 3 weeks on my boob still hurts, especially after a feed. Basically it feels as if it's really bruised internally and whenever new milk comes down it aches like mad!

I only had my DD 5 weeks ago (em C-section) - could it just be that my body is taking its time recovering because of all the other bits of healing that need to go on??

I also have a little crack on the nipple on that side which is trying to heal up - could it be that causing the pain across the whole breast?

Or is it something else completely like an infection or something? Should I get it checked out??

Any other experiences of mastitis gratefully received!! Thanks!

i wakened this morrning at 03.30 with Mastitis and have been in agony all day long. However, i have been using the Silverlon pad i got a few weeks ago for a blocked duct on the same side and also been using Booby Tubes which were in the freezer and they are giving me sssoooo much relief but are heating up quite quickly (15mins). I had mastitis 4 times with dd1 and this is the 1st time with dd2 (hopefully NEVER again).

I would say that it is possible you have thrush, have you been checked for that yet?

Sending big hugs and healing wishes your way, as i know what your going/been thru.

Hi Jenniebibs,
I sympathise. I have had mastitis twice and once with a breast abscess. ouch. all cleared up and now and have persevered with the bf. Fianlly everything is going well, and I feel like I'm not such a bab mum afterall. I still experience some shooting pains in my boob, even though I am all healed up. My HV thinks this is normal and is just the breast/milk supply sorting itself out again.
My DD also has quite a strong jaw action and sometimes my breast tissue feels bruised where her bottom jaw normally sits. This was much more noticeable when I had the mastitis, as I think my boob was just so much more tender. It helped me to try her in different poitions to give some areas of the breast a break sometimes.
I would say to stick with it, but get checkerd out too. It's worth it even if you suspect the slightest of problems.
