How often should I stop feed to burp baby?
(8 Posts)My 5 week old is formula fed and a very ‘hungry baby’!
She is in the slowest possible teat and I use the Mam anti colic bottles
I try to ensure I’m holding her in a good position but she still tries to guzzle and gulp and unfortunately takes down air sometimes
This will often result in hiccups or small/large amounts of suck... other times nothing
I make a point of stopping a feed to burp her at least 3-4 times during the feed (HV recommendation) but when I do she becomes very upset that the feed is interrupted and J don’t want to turn feeding into a negative situation for her
How often do you stop to burp baby- or do you leave it until the end of the feed?
Many Thanks
We stop every 1-2 fl oz to burp 4 week old DS as we noticed if we don't he promptly vomits up all of the expressed breast milk that took me 30 mins to express 🙈 He's more likely to vomit with formula but he hasn't been sick since we started burping him this frequently- and he sounds just like your little one in terms of how he feeds! Hope that helps?
If she is screaming when you take the bottle from her then I would carry on feeding as my HV told me they suck in more air crying halfway through the feed than they would carrying on. My DD would let me know when she needed winding by refusing the feed until she had burped then she would have another go at it.
It’s all trial and error to begin with
Plus I found the slow teats a nightmare as she would suck in air as the milk wasn’t flowing fast enough so I started using variflow teats - not sure if MAMs do an equivalent?
Once in the middle of the feed and at the end. He has reflux and it worked fine. No point in my view upsetting the baby with more frequent burping
I'd charge up to the next teats
He is 5 months now and I burp him only at the end. His burping got easier with getting bigger. At first I could not get it out of him easily. Could take 15 Min and it was impractical to interrupt feedingNow so long
Have you tried using infacol before a feed.
We had this with our baby when he was that age.. lasted 3 or maybe 4 weeks before he grew out of it ... infacol makes it easier to wind them. We would stop half way through a feed and burp and again at the end. Make sure that the teet has little or no air in it when sure feeds to help reduce amount of air she can swallow.
They do grow.out of it.
