Newborn constipated - cooled boiled water?

Hello,

My formula fed baby is six days old and I think he’s constipated.

He’s gone from doing about 4-5 poos a day (the runny, seedy kind) to 2 firmer play dough textured poos. I’m feeding his Aptamil.

He appears to be in pain too. It’s horrible to see.

I heard that cooled boiled water can help. Does anyone know how to prepare this? Do I just pour the boiled water into a sterilised bottle and wait for it to cool? I’m just concerned that limescale in the kettle might affect him if it gets out?

Also, any idea how much I should give him?

Any advic very much appreciated!

Thanks
Sophie

If your baby is only 6 days please speak to your midwife for rather than give water. If they're passing two poos a day and they're not hard ones you may not need to change anything. It's worth making sure that you are adding the powder to the full correct amount of water though and not packing down the scoops, as too concentrated can be dangerous.

Doesn’t sound like constipation to me. No poo would be a concern, or poo so hard they cant pass it without a struggle.

Could be wind if they appear to be in pain.

Midwife is the one to ask about this - six day old babies are still under the care of the midwife. Don't go diagnosing or treating a new baby based on Internet forum advice Hmm

We switched from aptamil to hipp organic when baby was about 8 weeks due to being a bit constipated, windy and unsettled. Much happier baby! However would not recommend giving cooled boiled water to 6 day old - contact midwives/health visitor xx
