Is it possible for my 5 month old to develop reflux??

Ok don't know if this is the right place to post this but my 5 month old ds has always had feeding problems, mainly not feeding enough, although in the last few weeks this has improved and he is now taking between 4 and 8oz each feed (as opposed to 2-4 oz before). He's always been quite a sicky baby, but now it seems hes bringing back at least half of his milk feed each time, its started as posseting but now he seems to do it more and more between feeds (it wont be in one hit, but constant little ickies between feeds iykwim)

could this be reflux?
if not does anyone knwo what it is/how to stop it?

hes happy and smiley the rest of the time but its a pita, and he doesnt seem to be gaining weight like he should.

hes ff btw if that makes any difference.

Sorry don't know but didn't want you to think noone had read your post.

Could be reflux and if not gaining weight well then it's a concern. See your HV and try and get gaviscon infant which can help. As you are ff you can add to bottles which thickens the feed. Friends who ff swear by it. (Only on prescription)

Hi stacey,

DS has silent reflux - the non sicky sort. Gaviscon Infant made the world of difference when we started on it near Christmas. There was a thread with a symptom list on it a few weeks ago, hold on....

here you go

HTH

My dd2 was a real battle 2 feed! Used o take forever 2 get her to drink just 4oz.

Then got what we thought was a stomach bug! Turns out shes dairy intolerant, she was 8 months before we knew.

My friends dd silent reflux was also a food intolerance! Don't know if that helps, just my experience of an alternative really.

Any consolation, dd is now 10 months, on soya formula and can't be filled. A different child.

Hi

Both my kids had reflux - the first was an obvious sicky baby and the second had silent reflux (i.e. no vomiting but distress during feeding). Both conditions got worse at about 4 months when their behaviours became really difficult - refusing to feed, screaming, pulling of the breast - and feeding was a nightmare. I have read that reflux can kick in after 3/4 months - I'm not sure why, maybe the continual reflux of acid starts to really hurt during feeding after a few months? I battled on with little help with the first, cutting out dairy etc. (don't really know if this helped but it made me feel I was doing someting) Insisted on a referral to the paediatrician with the second and was prescribed some meds which really helped with the feeding. If you think it is reflux then go to your G.P. - they will prob give you Gavisgon. If this doesn't work then demand to see a paed. Feeding a baby with reflux is hard so make sure you get lots of support and don't suffer in silence. On a good note, both are fully recovered now and my eldest is a great eater. Good luck.

hi my dd2 10 mths old has reflux and i found a formula which really helped her was enfamil a.r it is especially for reflux it has a thickener in it which helps keep the milk down.

if the gp agrees it is reflux it is worth mentioning the milk as my gp hadnt heard of it. and you can get it on prescription.

good luck i know how awful and distressing it is. xx

If gp agrees it's reflux it is worth asking for the enfamil - using gaviscon, though not harmful, means that baby gets an extra dose of sodium with each feed so it's common sense to avoid that if possible. I've had DS1 on the enfamil and DS2 on the gaviscon with nutramigen (hypoallergenic milk) - both work well with the sickness.

Good luck!

well doc wasnt overly brill and said it could be reflux, shes prescribed gaviscon 'to see what happens' (wtf??) but only 30 sachets, he has to have 2 per feed, that will last me........hmmm 2 days!!!!

he is feeding better, so might go back in a few days and say, yes it helped but iv done my research and would prefer if she could prescribe enfamil so as not to increase his sodium.

what i am not impressed with is the fact she kept asking what solids he was having as that should make it better etc etc etc..... but hes 5 months surely they aren't supposed to advocate weaning till 6 months???
