A glass of wine when breastfeeding?

Dd is 5 days old and after not having a drop of alcohol throughout my pregnancy I'm tempted by a glass of prosecco with a takeaway to feel somewhat like marking the weekend and celebrating. I'm mixed feeding, but bf first and using formula to top up as baby has a large appetite and I don't have much milk after a traumatic birth and blood loss. Nhs website seems to suggest one glass of prosecco will be fine, but I've just read on baby centre.com nothing in the first three months Sad any advice? If it will harm her or her feeding in any way it's not worth it to me but feeling a little disappointed as I thought I was allowed.

It's fine. It won't harm her at all. Have the prosecco!

I had some wine when I bought DD1 home from the hospital, I deserved it!

Have a read of this, it's from a very reliable website:

Enjoy your prosecco, you have earned it!

You crack on. No harm done whatsoever. You'd have to be practically comatose yourself for any alcohol to pass on to your baby. And you deserve it. There's more danger in actually being pissed and not being capable of looking after your baby that the odd glass or two of wine whilst breastfeeding. Enjoy!

I used to have a glass of beer and always felt like my milk increased after reading somewhere that hops can help with bf. It was probably wishful thinking but it definitely helped me relax.

Weirdly I didn't even like beer until I was pregnant Confused

Its fine (there's the same amount of alcohol in milk as blood - next to none), but if you are worried drink immediately after a breastfeed and then you'll have digested all the alcohol by the next feed.

I read a link on la leche league Facebook page that it is absolutely fine as the amount of alcohol passed in to the milk is minute. Can't remember the link or the exact science but it was something along the lines of 0.6% blood alcohol level puts you over the legal driving limit, 1.5% and you'd be dead from alcohol poisoning. So the highest alcohol percentage that your milk could possibly be is 1% (as much as is in some non alcoholic drinks!) I've made those figures up but something along those lines enjoy your prosecco!!

Basically you're fine to have a glass of prosecco! I was told as long as you're in a good enough state to look after the baby, you can feed the baby (but no bed sharing). I have a couple of glasses of wine about once a week, no ill effects on my 3 yo or my 3 month old.

Enjoy and don't just have one have 2 glasses haha. Hardly any alcohol passes into breastmilk and you would have to be in an alcohol induced coma for it have even a slight effect on baby . Gripe water used to contain a fair bit of alcohol and is why it worked so well for colicky babies (they were drunk as skunks haha so slept like babies haha ) . Honest though enjoy your prosecco . It won't do any harm at all

Breast milk and blood alcohol levels are about the same. Driving limit in the UK is between 0.05 and 0.08% blood alcohol. If your blood alcohol reached 0.5% you'd be dead, but your breast milk would still contain less alcohol than a non-alcoholic lager.

Alcohol doesn't affect breast milk only your reactions! Have a couple of glasses, just don't drop the baby Grin

I breastfeed my dd whilst having a glass or two of wine (usually when out for lunch) or sat on sofa at eve..now she sleeps 7-7 I don't do it much anymore, I just wait till she's gone to sleep - but that's because I get anxiety about not having quick enough reaction times 😛
