Infant feeding

ready-made vs powder formula. Is there a difference?

After serious breastfeeding problems I have been giving my ds the ready made, liquidy cartons of SMA gold since about week 2. He is now 11 weeks and has been absolutely fine on this so far - healthy weight, no tummy problems etc. However I have just today started trying to give him the powdered version (for various reasons, ovbiously its cheaper and we're going away soon and i know we can't get the ready made overseas) and he has been quite unhappy all day and has had real trouble settling down for the night with lots of cring, which is not like him at all. SMA say there is no difference between their ready made and powdered formula but it does appear to have had a bad affect on my LO. Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else? Will he get used to the powdered if we pursever or should we give up now before he gets worse? Help!

My LOs have always switched perfectly happily between readymade and powder SMA Gold (though they weren't/aren't exclusively bottlefed), so I suspect it's more likely that there is another cause for his grizzlyness. Sitting Bull's suggestions make sense. Or perhaps he's just having 'one of those days' - babies sometimes do, just as adults do too.

the cartons are pasteurised so maybe that process changes the flavour, texture, etc?! (just a guess really)

the cartons aren't pasteruised, they're UHT, which will def affect the flavour etc compared to powdered (think of the difference between Marvel and longlife milk...).

Could you taste a difference, shimmer?

My ds seems to be refusing to drink SMA gold made with the powder, but is fine with the expensive cartons!
The cartons do taste quite nice and creamy, and I don't like the powder milk taste.

Shimmer - there really is a difference, IMO. My DS (also on SMA) was the opposite - fine with the powdered version but not with the ready made. I've tried it and think thge ready made one tastes creamier. Suppose it depends on the water in your area.
