We've spent weeks researching and testing breast pumps and bottles in real homes with real families. Read our baby feeding bottle and breast pump reviews to find out which ones were awarded Mumsnet Best.

Start using Mumsnet PremiumBoob still painful on day 6/7 of antibiotics for mastitis
(8 Posts)Is this normal? It's definitely much LESS painful and red but latching on is still toe curling. Will this continue to improve on its own?
Mastitis normally needs a 2wk course of antibiotics. Also really essential to be completely draining the boob as often as possible. If you can't manage this with feeding because of the pain, you need to be expressing.
Alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol for the pain can help.
Also try soaking a nappy with hot water then laying over your boob. Sounds nuts but the nappy retains the heat for a long time which can be very soothing
Ok thanks, should I ask for an extension on the ABs then? I hope he's draining it fully, it's normally bearable after 30 secs or so but maybe I'll pump after he's fed on that side. Really fed up with it now .
Will try the nappy thing too.
Bumping.
Just wondering if I should ring 111 for some more ABs or whether the pain will eventually go?
Yes, go to out of hours. I had mastitis with DS2 and ended up on IV antibiotics in A&E.
Yes, I'd go to OOH, it can be really nasty if not sorted
How are you feeling now?
Thanks I've finished ABs now and it's still painful to feed him, the only reason I'm reticent to go to the dr is that it HAS got better and I read on kellymom that it can feel bruised for a week or so after mastitis or blocked duct has cleared. And I feel fine in myself. But the redness is worrying, it's not massively red but more of a pink area, and it is hot. Agh I just want it gone!
I think I will book an appointment at the GP tomorrow
