Infant feeding

Screaming & crying while feeding

DD is almost 10 weeks old and has always fed well. She is FF, gaining weight well, dirty nappy 1-2 times a day, plenty of wet nappies, all seems normal. The last few days we have had the following:

  • sleeping through the night and going ~12 hours without food (not sure if this is relevant/connected or not)
  • very snotty with a cold and cough (again, not sure if relevant/connected)
  • being less "desperate" for her bottle
  • halfway through her bottle, turns her head to one side and seems to want to stop so we pause for some burping (she burps fine)
  • when we restart, as soon as she takes her first gulp, her belly starts growling and she starts screaming and crying and kicking her legs
  • seems to fluff quite a lot as a result
  • it gets progressively worse throughout the day until by evening she's inconsolable almost as soon as she starts eating

I can't bear to see her in pain, and I'm at a loss what to do. Any ideas please?

Tia

DS had bad gas pain and also was having silent reflux issues. Our Pedi put him on baby's magic tea that helped and settled him. He now sometimes become fussy due to gassiness but with this supplement he becomes settled.

Hi alltalknobaby

Not sure if you've found your answer/solution but thought I'd comment.

Maybe because she's poorly she might be off slightly anyway but maybe she had trapped wind and colic?

We went through a phase of this and used infocol (not sure on the spelling). A little of that before a feed and he burped much better and easier and was finishing a feed better. From what I understand it makes the wind bubbles bigger and easier to bring up.

As for colic if that's the case there isn't much you can do but try to console and just cuddles really.

Let us know how you get on Flowers

Hi bringme - thanks for asking. She is doing a lot better thanks. She was diagnosed with a chest infection, reflux and colic so has had antibiotics and we are trying colief. Poor thing has been through the wars a bit but seems to be improving now and very chirpy in herself.

Glad to hear you had some relief with infacol. I was initially annoyed when doc said colic as I think of it as a catch-all term for when they don't really know what is wrong. But maybe I was wrong. Grin

Also baby gaviscon for the reflux, which seems to be helping

Alltalknobaby - So sorry I know you replied 5 days ago but have just seen!

Poor thing, really going through it. At least you have some answers and finally have some sort of solution.

I know what you mean about the colic. I always thought the same too to be honest.
