Hi, I'm a maternity nurse who specialises in bottle refusal. Getting a baby to happily take a bottle within 2 to 48 hours using a gentle method that does not to stress baby. I would be happy to give you some tips

How old is your baby?
My DS2 refused a bottle from very early on. I abandoned it for several weeks and have just tried again (he is 15 weeks) with much more success this time.
Any of the following may help:

  • warming the bottle a bit more than you think (you are often advised to test the milk on your wrist and for it to feel neither hot nor cold, ie body temp; I find that warming it to the stage where it does feel slightly warm is much more palatable to the baby - obviously not scalding!)
  • choosing a time when baby is not completely ravenous or fractious. I think I made the mistake of always trying the bottle in the evening when he was already quite wound up. A mid morning or mid afternoon feed has been key to our success.
  • it can help to swaddle baby so his arms don't fight the bottle. We didn't have to do this this time round but found it effective with our DS1.

Oh and meant to say - a faster flowing teat might help, so the baby doesn't have to work so hard for the milk. But not so fast it just flows into his mouth.
No amount of coaxing worked with DS2 when he was a young baby, I think he just knew what he wanted and it wasn't the bottle. He has perhaps got more pragmatic with age Grin
