Infant feeding

4 month old being fussy with bottle

DS is breastfed apart from rare occasions when I have had to go out and he has taken a bottle of formula as I find it difficult to express.

We have decided to introduce a bottle feed every night but it's been very hit and miss. He took one full bottle from me Thursday night, 2 bottles on Friday night as I was out for a few hours but then has refused them since. He will take around 80ml but it takes ages with him chewing on the teat, spitting it back out and generally fussing.

Is he only needing 80ml? (He took 200ml Thursday night and 170ml Friday). He is a little and often breastfeeder. Never more than 5 minutes at a time and wakes every 2-3 hours to be fed at night.

Will he get used to it if we keep persevering?

Yes, he'll prob get used to it. No need to worry about quantity with a baby of this age presumably growing well. If he goes a bit short with the bottle he'll just make up any shortfall when he next comes to the breast :).

Unless it's important he has bottles every night, it doesn't sound worth the struggle to me - just give him a bottle when you actually have to? But up to you, obviously :)

He is doing fine with weight and is just below 50th centile where he has been since birth.

I don't want him to refuse bottles when I have to leave him (got some KIT days coming up and I'm back to work fairly soon) and so I would rather he gets used to my DH doing one bottle a night.

Maybe you need to go up a teat size which is something I didn't know when I had mine

Which bottle are you using? He might prefer a different one or not be very hungry my ff baby has huge variations in how much milk she takes.

We are using tommee tippee ones and have tried both a number 1 and number 2 teat. It may just be that he isn't hungry as he has a breastfeed at 7pm before bed and we were doing the bottle at the first night wake which is usually between 9 & 10pm.
