Infant feeding

10months.. won't drink out of anything except boob

ANY advice/tips welcome! I've have been trying to introduce a sippy cup since my baby was 5 months old and he still won't use anything other than my boob. I've tried tommee tipped free flow, doidy, munchkin 360, cup with a straw... anything he has he takes a mouthful and then spits it out all down him. Tried expressed milk, formula, cows milk, water, weak squash...I'm desperate to cut down on breastfeeding him and had wanted to stop when he got to 1. It's also causing issues with work now. He's been at nursery for 2 days a week for the last month from 7.30-5 and refused to drink anything while there. I've also had to leave work to collect him 4 times as he's got so worked up by not having me/boob there. Work have been good but starting to lose patience now, as they have to get cover each time. I'm not sure what else to do? At the minute it feels like he will never drink

Unfortunately I have no advice to help, but I'd be really interested to hear other people's suggestions - my DS is 6.5 months and won't accept anything other milk direct from the breast.

Hope someone can help us both soon!

have you tried giving him a sippy cup to play with rather than just at meal times?

have you tried a sports bottle style - eg systema ?

failing that can you make sure he gets lots of liquid in his eg melon , cucumber, weetaBix with lots of milk etc?

My dd was similar, would only have the boob. She now drinks out of one of these bottles (water). Still won't take cows milk / formula (she's 15 months) She drinks quite a bit from it and like the little loop to carry it around

Poor you and him! Sounds stressful for you both.

Does he eat solids well? You can spoon feed formula mixed with cereals perhaps? Or water down purées?

How far away is his nursery? Can you take an extended lunch to go and feed him then go back to work?

also will he feed from a bottle? Get your partner to try feeding him expressed milk in s bottle whilst rocking him. Sounds weird but rocking can sometimes encourage babas to drink

This happened with dd1 (now 13). I was desperate to stop breastfeeding and she was having none of it! I tried lots of bottles / cups and nothing worked. In the end I took a persistent approach, using the same bottle (tommee tippee) each day for about 3 / 4 days - each day she would drink a little more until she eventually took the whole bottle.
To avoid this happening again dc 2 & 3 always had s 10pm bottle feed.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, he has always refused a bottle as well. Think we've tried every one on the market! He's eating well but not keen on being spoon fed.
Going to feed him at lunch would help however I teach and don't have a free period over lunch. (Only have a 30min lunch break)
Will buy a sports bottle today and as I'm not in work until Wednesday, will try and push a cup rather than feed him for a few days. I felt I was so prepared for all the issues with breastfeeding at the beginning, I never imagined it would be impossible to get him to stop! Confused

Rumble, my dd totallyrefuse a bottle - in the end I chose one bottle and persisted with it each day for her 3pm feed until she finally took it. I think the first day she drank 1/2 oz, then 1oz, then a bit more until she finally had the whole bottle.
About a month later she moved to an avert soft spout cup with no problems. If I were you I'd try to move to a bottle first.

Dd2 was like this, I left her with my parents for 2 days when we went to a wedding at 10 mo and she barely drank a thing. Eventually she did start using a straw but never ever drank from a bottle or sippy cup. I stopped bf at 1 year so she had to use the straw, which she did. Try not to stress, he'll get there eventually!

lambro- that doesn't sound very nice for your dd! I can understand leaving a baby for work but why would you leave a bf who you know didn't take a bottle for 2 days just to go to a wedding?! You almost joke about it - it must have been awful for your child

She was 10mo, eating well just not drinking milk, obviously I wouldn't have left an ebf baby to starve! Overreaction much!
