Infant feeding

How do I build milk supply again without making DD suffer?

Hi all,
I breastfed exclusively for the first four months then gradually started to introduce formula for one or two feeds a day because she didn't seem to be having long enough feeds to fully satisfy her. I've also found it convenient when out and about or to have the occasional night off so I don't want to cut the bottle off completely but it feels like she's getting less and less milk from me and she's always still hungry after breastfeeding so I'm feeling like I need to do more formula feeds when actually I want to predominantly breastfeed.
She is 7 months now and is on three healthy and filling meals a day.
I find that if she sleeps through the night a full 12 hours I've built enough milk up for a proper feed from both breasts but then that seems to be it for the rest of the day then, she might only feed for a minute or so before getting frustrated because there's nothing there Sad
I desperately want to build my supply back up but as far as I can tell I just need to keep feeding her when she wants it and not offer her any supplement and my body should make more but I can't make her starve while this happens surely? I've tried a few times and given in to her with the bottle because she's so hungry.
Is there another way?

Are you able to express at all? If you express in between feeds (or even after every feed) it'll send messages to your body that you've a hungry baby and to produce more milk. The bonus is also that you can feed your baby what you've expressed.

Think of your breasts more as factories rather than warehouses, they should be able to produce a good amount of milk for your DD when she's feeding, they don't necessarily need to store much milk (some people have very small storage capacity in their breasts and their body just produces milk on demand)

There's a really helpful website that you should check out if you haven't seen it already... Kellymom. Tonnes of useful info on there.

Good luck

Yiu're not starving her Mummy, just keep offering her the breast, if she comes off one, offer the other and yiu can keep doing this as often as you like until she's full.

It might be useful to speak to a Breastfeeding Counsellor about this, especially as you want to continue predominately Bfing. Have you got the Bfing Helpline numbers? Smile
