Not sure where to post - 1 yr BF baby to have vitamin supplement?

Hi

Sorry, wasn't sure where to post this.

I took DD (1 yr old) to be weighed this afternoon, she was 20lbs 5oz. She's never lost weight and has always gained (she was 7ls 4oz at birth).
The HV asked me how she was getting on and I said that most meals are a bit of a battle and she needs a distraction for her to open her mouth and eat the food. She takes a few bits of finger foods etc but she doesn't eat volumes. The HV said I need to give her vitamin supplments because she doesn't eat a huge amount (she has 1 weetabix for breakfast, equivalent of 3/4 jar for lunch plus fruit or yoghurt and equivalent of half jar of food plus fruit and yog for tea).

I bf her once or twice through the night and usually 4 or 5 times during the day (all are quite short feeds except the bedtime one).

Does anyone here give vitamins to their babies? I'm worried now that DD is mal nourished

doesnt sound malnourished to me

my ds is aged 2.3 and only weighs 25lb but im meant to give him calcium supplements, impossible, and vitamin drops which are easy to use. tiny little bottle with a dropper that you squeeze out about 5 drops into her meals once a day

Your lo eats far far more than ds (17months)

I was told to give vitamins to my dd1 when she was 9 mos old, breastfed and eating tons. Sounds like standard advice from hv. I ignored it.

The way to get her to eat more solid food would be to offer less milk. But the milk is probably more nutritious than anything else in her diet so why bother? To make the hv happy? She will probably eat more solid food as she loses interest in bf or finds it inadequate to her needs. BTW have you tried finger foods? Many babies prefer the control this gives them. It can be messy, but more food goes down. Doesn't matter how many teeth she has, they chew with their gums if necessary.

EW - the HV did tell me to stop bfing in the day so that DD eats more. I thought the quantity wasn't that bad just the fact she always needs a distraction to eat.

I'll try more finger foods, I don't mind the mess as we get into a bit of a foody mess anyway trying to get the food in her mouth.

Brandy - oh I had no idea they were drops, still I like to think I give DD a varied diet and I bet the drops cost a bit.

Relax and go with your baby. She won't starve herself to death. While she is waving the fingerfoods about you can do something else in the kitchen, or eat your own meal. You'll probably soon find she wants whatever you've got!
