Slow weight gain

Interested to hear other MNetter's stories if their babies were slow to gain weight.

DD is 12 weeks, 3540g at birth and EBF. She now weighs 4800g (at the last check 10 days ago). She was born on the 50th centile and dropped to the 25th which she is now just under. She is a happy, contented baby, plenty of wet and dirty nappies, active and alert when awake and now starting to reach and grab things and holding herself up. I know I should logically be thinking that weight gain isn't the be all and end all but I still can't shake the worry that she's not gaining weight as she should. Sad

She also has a mild tongue tie which I'm waiting on a referral consultant appointment for. The HCPs I've spoken to have made me feel neurotic about it and have told me it's nothing to be concerned about Hmm

Any advice would be most welcome. TIA

Dropping up to two centile lines is completely normal and not regarded as a cause for concern. Some babies are born a bit above their natural line and taper off a bit; some below and catch up and so on. Birth weight is affected by all kinds of factors (maternal health, having fluids in labour etc) and doesn't necessarily reflect where the baby is 'meant' to be.

Both my EBF DSs were born between 50th and 75th and settled on 25th, where they have stayed. Neither DH nor I is particularly tall so I wouldn't expect them to be big.

Honestly, unless you and your DH are both six foot rugby players, I wouldn't worry. The tongue tie may be a factor as it can affect efficiency, but it does all sound perfectly normal. Btw, HCPs telling you that TT is irrelevant is irritatingly common- most of them don't know much about it. Get the referral and see what is said.

Sorry I only know weight in pounds and ounces, but my son was 6lb 7oz at birth, and born on the 9th centile. He dropped to below the 2nd for months, he was still having plenty of milk (exclusively formula fed), and proper adult food from 6 months (he never had baby food). He eventually went back to the 9th centile, and now at nearly 14 months he is just slightly over the 25th.
Our hv wasn't concerned because he was gaining at a study pace, and healthy overall.
