Ranitidine or Omeprazole?

My gp has given us omeprazole for dd's reflux. He said he 'preferred' it to ranitidine as it is easier to take?? He seemed to be talking bollocks in all honesty so I'm not sure I believe him. Having now seen the side effects of omeprazole I'm wondering if it would be best to try ranitidine first? I kind of got the impression from other people's experiences that that was the usual route to take? I've not given her any omeprazole yet because of the possible side effects but then I guess ranitidine has possible side effects too. Anyone have experience with one or the other or both?

We had ranitidine for reflux and it worked brilliantly, made a different child.

Thanks, I'm going to go back to the gp today and ask to try that first before trying omeprazole. Hopefully I can sort the reflux out by diet alone but if not I'd like to have it there just in case.

We have tried ranitidine twice both times its caused ds2 to cry inconsolably and not sleep until I stopped it.

Oh no! I guess it trial and error then... I don't really want to give her any meds if I can avoid it. I'm worried about what all the acid is doing to her digestive system though!

I know a lot of friends who have been made to persist with ranitidine when finding it very hard to give, and only once they had proven that it wasn't working were they allowed omeprazole, as it is a lot more expensive and usually works better. Ranitidine does work for some though. Both have their downsides. Sounds like your GP decided to pass straight to the more effective one?

Oh really? Wow... Maybe I misjudged the gp! I'll just have a chat about it with them today and see what the best route is. I'm hoping they'll just tell me I'm not putting dd at risk by not medicating straight away.

Agree Omeprazole is often more effective but it depends on the child. What side effects are you experiencing? Or do you just mean the potential side effects?

It's more the possible side effects I'm concerned about. I might be being overly paranoid...
