Infant feeding

Poorly baby will only feed from one side

My baby is 8.5 months and has bronchiolitis. He has been quite poorly and spent 3 days in hospital, but is now home. All the way through I have struggled to get him to eat and drink, and at one point he needed fluids via syringe as he wouldn't BF, eat solids or drink water at all. He is now eating a small amount again, but will only BF from one breast. If I offer the other breast, either first or second, he cries and arches his back and pulls away like I am trying to poison him! I am not very good at pumping, and I can already tell my milk supply has dropped on that side - I was struggling with wngorgement at the weejend, but that has stopped now. To complicate things he won't take a bottle, so whatever I pump is tending to be wasted. Why would he suddenly get such a strong preference? What can I do to persuade him to take both breasts again?

Is he uncomfortable for some reason lying on his 'other' side? You could try lying him down facing the same way to feed from the breast he doesn't like - a bit awkward to position him for you, but I'm sure you could manage to prop him on some cushions or something?

I don't know. I mean, he's not a happy not generally, he's got a sore throat and a wheezey chest, but I don't know that one side is any worse than other. That's a good idea, I used to feed him like that as a newborn when he struggled to latch. I'll give it a try in the morning.
